General Function

Under the direction of the Hospitality Manager, the Cook shall be responsible for interpreting La Foret's mission through food service and a feeling of hospitality. This is a non-exempt staff position.

Qualifications

  • Experience or training in cooking for large groups
  • Experience or training in directing the work of food service personnel
  • Experience in customer service

Areas of Responsibility

The Cook shall have competence in and delegated responsibility for the following:

Food Service

  • Assist with all food service aspects in compliance with health and safety codes and other regulations
  • Prepare and serve timely meals according to established menus
  • Respond to customer requests and to special diets

Shift Leader

  • Primary Cook acts as the shift leader
  • Maintain established standard of cleanliness for kitchen, dining room and restrooms
  • Ensure that menus are followed and that meals are provided on time and in compliance with health and safety codes,
  • During a shift, direct food service personnel to ensure that all tasks are completed before, during and after a meal
  • Guest Services personnel will be in attendance during some meals to be available to the group, to ensure that the promised meal service is delivered and to assist the kitchen staff as necessary. Guest Services will consult with Cook if questions arise about the food service set up, and the Cook will direct Guest Services in needed kitchen assistance.

Cleanliness and Maintenance

  • Perform cleaning functions in dining, food service and storage areas
  • Ensure that all equipment is operable and to ask for assistance when equipment is not working as it should

General

  • Receive, store and label foodstuffs and supplies in refrigerator, freezer, pantry and storeroom
  • Communicate in a timely, clear and logical manner
  • Respond effectively and efficiently in a crisis; problem solve under pressure
  • Provide environmental stewardship relative to food packaging and waste disposal
  • Other duties as assigned

Expectations

This position has a primary impact on the overall effectiveness with which La Foret interprets its mission to its constituents and community. The Cook is expected to provide a healthy and safe food service program delivered at the highest level of hospitality and customer service. S/he is responsible for performing work with considerable attention and alertness with frequent periods of concentration. The effectiveness of this position will be measured annually by the successful fulfillment of the stated areas of responsibility.

Essential Functions of the Job

  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • Ability to read and follow menus and recipes
  • Ability to lift and carry 30 pounds
  • Ability to use all types of commercial kitchen equipment
  • Ability to use visual and auditory senses to identify and respond to problems and hazards in the food preparation area
  • Ability to use cleaning and janitorial supplies

Accountability

The Cook is an employee of La Foret and shall be directly accountable to the Hospitality Manager.
