Journey Welder/Truck Equipment Installer

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is currently seeking a sharp, skilled and motivated welder to fill our Journey Welder/Truck Equipment Installer position. The ideal candidate will have a vast knowledge of welding techniques and an ability to fabricate items for heavy equipment.
This position will make repairs to equipment that breaks down due to pins and bushings getting loose and welds breaking. A knowledge of welding and fabrication is very important to the day to day operation of our equipment shop. May be required to perform maintenance and repair of UDOT and Fleet Operations equipment; all types of duties including: inspecting, diagnosing, adjusting, overhauling and repairing vehicular equipment, heavy equipment and all gasoline, diesel and hydraulic equipment.
May be required to participate in the District Snow Removal Plan which consists of plowing snow on occasion on the state highway system.
Principle Duties
As a Journey Welder/Truck Equipment Installer, you will:
- Lay out, cut, preheat, clean, fit and otherwise prepare materials to be welded.
- Weld, solder, braze, grind, and/or fabricate various materials.
- Build, fabricate, or repair structures, equipment, and/or miscellaneous articles from verbal instructions, blueprints and/or working drawings.
- Assemble and disassemble equipment and component parts. Perform body work.
- Repair, clean, adjust and/or perform preventive maintenance on vehicles, equipment, tools, or machinery, etc.
- Use and operate a variety of hand tools, electrical, mechanical, and automotive equipment.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose problems, make adjustments, repair and/or perform preventative maintenance on computers, vehicles, equipment, or machinery, etc.
- Modify and adjust metal parts for special projects.
- Install wing plow parts and components including hydraulic parts and components for wing plows and front plows.
Minimum Qualifications
In order to qualify you must have all of the following:
- At least four (4) years of directly related professional experience or substitution of directly related education for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
- A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months after hire.
- 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
- Your own full set of mechanics tools (tool allowance will be provided).
Minimum starting rate is $30 per hour. Offers will be made based on a review of individual experience.
Preferences
Preference may be given to those with all around mechanical abilities.

- operate applicable specialized equipment

- This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
- Physical Requirements: Moderate - Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
- Working Conditions:Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or chemicals, etc.
- May be subject to 24 hour availability, overtime and varied work schedules due to inclement weather conditions, job assignment and emergencies.
- Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Director/Group Leader.
