JOB TITLE: Paraprofessional

REPORTS TO: Building Principal / Director of Exceptional Learners

Primary Function: A high school paraprofessional works under the supervision of a licensed teacher to support students with IEPs. Their duties include providing one-on-one help with lessons, reinforcing concepts, supervising students during non-instructional times, and implementing behavioral and academic support plans. They help create a positive learning environment and ensure students receive the individualized support they need to succeed.

Representative Essential Duties:

  • Work with groups of students inside and/or outside the classroom in either small groups or one-on-one instruction
  • Monitor appropriate student behavior
  • Assist the teacher in providing supervision to students in various locations throughout the school day.
  • Assist the teacher with classroom management and academic support
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents and other staff members
  • Help the teacher maintain a neat and orderly classroom
  • Help ensure the health, welfare and safety of students
  • Assist with behavior issues and behavior plans
  • Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of individual students
  • Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings and special events as assigned
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Must possess the minimum of a high school diploma or equivalency
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Basic technology skills
  • Must pass pre-employment criminal history check

Working Conditions:

Working conditions for a high school special education paraprofessional may be physically and emotionally demanding, requiring the ability to stand, walk, lift, and assist with the various physical or emotional needs of the students. The environment can be noisy, and paraprofessionals may face unique challenges such as non-compliant student behavior and challenging social-emotional needs.
