Occupational Therapist – Hand Therapy Specialist
Job Summary:
This position is responsible for delivering high-quality occupational therapy services, specializing in hand therapy. The therapist will evaluate, develop treatment plans, deliver care, monitor progress, and manage discharge processes for patients, while ensuring effective communication with patients, physicians, and care teams. The role includes supervision of assistants and aides, participation in program development, and maintaining strong relationships with facilities and clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate and treat patients in accordance with American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) standards, developing individualized plans of care and establishing appropriate therapy duration and frequency.

  • Document patient needs, progress, goals, and treatment updates clearly and in a timely manner.

  • Supervise and delegate care responsibilities to assistants and aides, ensuring alignment with state laws and quality standards.

  • Modify patient care plans based on changes in status or response to treatment.

  • Fabricate custom splints and casts for various complex diagnoses.

  • Educate patients on home programs, energy conservation, and job modification strategies.

  • Participate in clinical education programs, student supervision, and community engagement initiatives.

  • Support the development and implementation of new clinical programs and initiatives.

  • Adhere to all compliance, safety, and ethical guidelines, including OSHA, Medicare, and facility policies.

  • Assist with equipment maintenance and quality assurance initiatives as needed.

  • May require travel between locations or off-site activities.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of upper extremity anatomy, kinesiology, and post-surgical protocols.

  • Proficient in physical agent modalities including electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and thermotherapy.

  • Effective clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and documentation abilities.

  • Leadership and mentoring skills for supervision of clinical staff.

  • Familiarity with therapeutic equipment and splinting tools.

  • Computer proficiency for documentation, scheduling, and reporting.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an ACOTE-accredited Occupational Therapy program.

  • Licensed Occupational Therapist in the applicable state.

  • Advanced education and documented training in:

    • Upper extremity anatomy and pathology

    • Connective tissue healing and mobilization

    • Biomechanics and kinesiology

    • Post-surgical protocols for the upper limb

    • Use and effects of physical agent modalities (PAMs)

  • CPR certification and ongoing continuing education to maintain licensure.
