Canton, New York, United States St. Lawrence University Full time

Primary Responsibilities

St. Lawrence University, a private non-denominational liberal arts institution of about 1800 undergraduates, invites applications for a tenure-track, open-rank Endowed Chair position in Geology, beginning Fall

We seek a mineralogist or petrologist whose teaching and research emphasize field-based studies in hard-rock geology and has experience or demonstrated interest in research based in the Adirondack region or comparable terranes. The successful candidate will develop an active research program that involves undergraduate students. Teaching responsibilities will include core laboratory courses for majors, including Earth Materials, an introductory geology course in Environmental Geology, and geology classes in the candidate's area of expertise. Preference will be given to candidates whose teaching and research interests include topics such as economic geology or geochemistry. The successful candidate has the opportunity to contribute to the environmental science curriculum and will join a vibrant interdisciplinary collaboration with Environmental Studies and Physics faculty. We are especially interested in individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching, a collaborative approach to research and fieldwork, and enthusiasm for engaging students in hands-on learning experiences — in the classroom, lab, and field.

The Geology program maintains extensive rock, thin-section, and mineral collections, a preparatory laboratory, and a range of analytical instrumentation, including petrographic microscopes, an SEM with EDAX and color CL, and a magnetometer/gradiometer. Numerous opportunities exist for professional development, including start-up funding, on-going funding for research and travel, support for student research assistants and internships, and resources for national and international field trips.

The Geology program graduates 10–15 majors annually, offering a broad and rigorous geoscience curriculum that prepares students for a variety of professional careers in geology and environmental science. The program maintains an active Geology Club, AAPG Student Chapter, and Sigma Gamma Epsilon honor society, and benefits from a vibrant, dedicated alumni network that provides professional connections and mentorship for current students.
