Position Overview
The Lead Data Scientist will drive operational excellence and strategic decision-making through advanced analytics, machine learning, and engineering. The individual in this role will lead through design, development, and deployment of data and machine learning-driven solutions to business problems. In this role, the Lead Data Scientist will work at the nexus of business priorities - patient insights, healthcare analytics, and operational efficiency applying data science techniques to optimize operations and enhance outcomes across our mission-driven initiatives.
Essential Duties
Include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Apply machine learning, deep learning, and artificial intelligence techniques to uncover patient behavioral insights, improve healthcare delivery, and drive financial sustainability.
- Analyze patient and healthcare datasets to identify trends, optimize interventions, and align services with evolving patient needs.
- Mentor and coach junior data science staff.
- Lead and coordinate data science projects from inception to production deployment.
- Lead team to solve complex problems using sophisticated analytical thought to identify and implement innovative solutions.
- Influence product teams through presentation of data-based recommendations.
- Work with stakeholders to identify, refine, prioritize, and formalize requirements for machine learning-based solutions to business problems.
- Act as resource and subject matter expert in core team and/or cross-functional meetings.
- Ability to communicate complex results to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Informally lead staff; responsibilities include, but are not limited to, organizing and prioritizing work, training/developing, and providing feedback on work performance.
- Communicate goals clearly to employees to ensure understanding and success in achieving them.
- Motivate and inspire employees to do their best work through coaching.
- Maintain morale and support employee engagement initiatives.

- Ability to lift up to 10 pounds for approximately 5% of a typical working day.
- Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 80% of a typical working day.
- Ability and means to travel between Madison locations.
- Ability to travel 5% of working time away from work location. May include overnight/weekend travel.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, information technology, or related field; or High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of Bachelor's degree; or Associate's degree and 2 years of relevant experience.
- 6+ years of experience in a data scientist role.
- 6+ years of experience working with large datasets for drawing business insights.
- 6+ years of experience with artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms.
- 4+ years of demonstrated experience working with cloud computing and cloud engineering.
- 4+ years of demonstrated experience working with SQL in an analytics capacity.
- 2+ years of experience developing data science pipelines with CI/CD build processes.
- 2+ years of experience training and developing junior staff.
- Professional working knowledge of statistics and modeling techniques.
- Professional working knowledge of open-source AI models.
- Proficient in Python and/or R.
- Demonstrated experience and mastery of machine learning.
- Demonstrated ability and history of learning new technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
- Legal authorization to work in the country of employment without current or future sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or related field.
- Professional working knowledge of Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, or Recommender Systems.
- Professional working knowledge of distributed computing and big data technologies, such as Spark or related technologies.
Salary Range:
$121, $206,000.00The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis.
