Cashier

Fiddleheads Food Co-op is a Natural Foods Grocery Store in downtown New London. We currently have a job openings for Cashier. Must be available for a varied schedule including days, evenings and weekends. Natural Foods knowledge a plus. Spanish a plus. Experience preferred - job training for the right candidate.

Cashier Cashiers handle customer transactions on cash registers, must be highly accurate in their operations and comfortable using a Point of Sale system. Cashiers help to oversee the entire front end and café area keeping it clean and well stocked with coffee and supplies as well as stocking store department shelves and cases.

Primary Responsibilities :

Customer Service: Customer service is Fiddleheads primary focus in providing food, goods and services to its customers. It is the goal of the staff that all customers are treated in a respectful and courteous manner, paying close attention to their individual needs.

• Be open and ready to assist customers, fielding their questions, concerns and requests.
• Assist customers in all departments in a prompt, friendly, courteous manner.
• Resolve customer complaints in a fair and tactful manner.
• Create avenues for communication and achieve results by promoting teamwork and working collaboratively.

Essential Functions:

• Participate in all preparations prior to the opening of the store and/or closing down of store appropriately ensuring a secure, neat, clean store that is operationally prepared for the opening staff.
• Personable greeting of all customers.
• Anticipate and be proactive in meeting customer needs
• Perform all opening, operating, and closing functions are sustained to high standards on a day to day basis.
• Ability to use POS system to accurately calculate customer purchases.
• Use secure money handling processes.
• Ability to maintain accurate cash register till.
• Receive payment by cash, credit card, debit card, gift card, EBT card.
• Ability to count back change.
• Identify prices of goods by using barcodes, PLU #'s, price overrides and POS system menu.
• Knowledge of staff and customer policies.
• Assist with maintaining Co-op in a safe and orderly condition.
• Willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities.
• Follow all safety practices and policies.
• Model fair, consistent and respectful behavior..

Communication:

• Communicate respectfully, openly and honestly.
• Listen attentively to others, ask questions, and remain open to other viewpoints.
• Demonstrate empathic listening skills.
• Know what makes Co-ops unique and how to explain/promote Fiddleheads membership.

Additional General Responsibilities:

• Computer proficiency Excel, Word, and email
• Knowledge of POS systems.
• Ability to handle money and electronic transactions accurately

Qualifications:

• Prior successful experience in a position which required handling money and being highly accurate in those operations.
• Ability to prioritize tasks
• Ability to manage multiple demands and meet deadlines.
• Develop and maintain mutually respectful relations with customers and staff.
• Ability to work as a team member as well as independently.
• Ability to handle stressful situations in a calm, effective manner
• Knowledge of store policies both staff and customer facing
• Must be available days, evenings, weekends.
• Ability to work in a multisensory environment, (Noise, food odors, grain and spice dust, outdoors when necessary).
• Ability to lift 25 pounds frequently during a shift
• Physical flexibility to stand, walk, squat, bend, balance and rotate body.
• Previous retail, grocery and natural foods experience a plus.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $16.65 per hour

Expected hours: 15 – 22 per week
