Occupational Summary
The Assistant Director for Partnerships is a member of the team at the Duke Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship, which is an interdisciplinary hub facilitating collaborative scholarship between community partners and Duke faculty, staff, and students, to address pressing societal challenges. The Center connects community organizations with students and researchers to explore difficult questions, analyze data, and enhance their impactful work. The Duke Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship is a joint effort of Duke Community Affairs and Interdisciplinary Studies in the Office of the Provost. The Center supports the university's ongoing commitment to "partner with purpose," a cornerstone of Duke's vision for its second century.
This position focuses on building and supporting partnerships between Duke faculty and staff with community organizations around community-engaged scholarship projects and programs. This includes developing materials to support such partnerships, communicating partnership opportunities, and offering consultations, trainings, technical assistance and navigation of resources to the Duke and local community. The emphasis for this role is coordinating between community partners and faculty, staff, students, campus programs and organizational units at Duke around community-engaged research, teaching, and learning.
Work Performed
Research and maintain descriptions of community-engaged programs across campus and build and maintain relationships with faculty and staff leading such programs and projects. Support efforts around matchmaking and consultation to facilitate new partnerships in key priority areas for the Center (20%);
Coordinate events to promote partnership opportunities, such as mixers and workshops where community partners and faculty or staff can meet and learn from each other (15%);
Coordinate community-based internship program for undergraduate and graduate students, including recruiting community organizations as hosts, raising awareness of the program, supporting matchmaking and recruiting students, and overseeing training and learning as part of the internship experience (25%);
Research, analyze and develop a framework for a robust offering of training and learning modules and resources to build capacity building for effective community-engaged scholarship. Support training opportunities for Duke campus, including through external contractors as appropriate (20%);
Lead efforts to address administrative barriers to community-engaged scholarship on campus, publishing resource materials, offering trainings to faculty, staff and community partners, documenting best practices, and enhancing capacity to address administrative needs (10%);
Design and lead communities of practice for faculty, staff, students, and community partners around specific skill sets or issue interests related to Center for Community Engagement priorities;
Support coordination of "Knowledge Hubs" for faculty, staff, students, and community partners interested in specific issue areas prioritized by the University and Center;
Work with the DCA and Interdisciplinary Studies Communications team to promote Center activities, raise awareness of existing community-engaged scholarship and successful partnerships on campus, and share opportunities for collaboration with stakeholders;
Maintain relationships with campus departments, programs, organizations groups as well as professional associations and colleagues at other institutions to networks to share and elevate best practices for community engagement, maintain awareness of campus partner interests and initiatives, and achieve community-engaged scholarship objectives;
With the AVP of Community-Engaged Scholarship and Center Faculty Director, and through partnerships with key faculty, facilitate the development of research focal points and, where appropriate, curricular and co-curricular opportunities across campus;
Monitor campus and community participation rates for community engagement opportunities and contribute those insights to campus/community partnership mapping and evaluation efforts.
Required Qualifications at this Level
Education/Training:
Bachelor's degree (Master's or higher degree preferred).
Experience:
Three years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
