Survey Tech

Job Summary:

The Survey Tech plays a key role in supporting field measurement, data collection, and mapping activities that ensure accuracy and efficiency across project sites. This role combines hands-on fieldwork with technical proficiency, requiring the ability to maintain survey equipment, record precise measurements, assist with report and drawing preparation, and learn advanced surveying tools, software, and UAV systems. A successful Survey Tech demonstrates strong attention to detail, a commitment to safety, effective communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in dynamic outdoor environments while developing toward higher-level survey responsibilities.

Whitaker Construction, founded in 1953, has over 70 years of experience in the heavy civil and underground utility construction industry. Whitaker, an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan) company, has become one of the largest contractors in the intermountain area with more than 500 employees and nearly 50 crews. We perform sanitary sewer, storm drain, culinary water, irrigation, earthwork, roadway construction, dams, landfills, natural gas pipelines, industrial piping, and telecommunication projects primarily in Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Colorado, and Oregon.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Including but not limited to the list below.

• Maintain survey equipment through regular cleaning and calibration.
• Record data, including field As-built measurements, Layout Points and Topographic points.
• Assist in the preparation of reports, maps and drawings using AutoDesk, TBC, Carlson, and Microsoft Products.
• Coordinates and schedules work of the department Survey Tech II and Tech III levels
• Attention to detail and accuracy.
• Must promote a culture of safety and awareness by practicing and enforcing safe work procedures.
• Ability to learn survey field measurements and layout techniques.  
• Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications and Skills

• Capable of obtaining a 14 CFR PART 107 REMOTE PILOT CERTIFICATION
• Capable of obtaining MSHA 24 HR New Miner Training.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Capable of learning to operate Whitaker sUAS systems and software WINGTRA II, DJIm300, DJI Mavic 3E, Pix4d Mapper, Pix4d Matic, Pix4D Survey.
• Train to become proficient with the survey and grade control software namely, Siteworks, Trimble Access, GCS900, Earthworks, X-Pad and SCS900.
• Ability to learn and master image processing software for the purpose of generating accurate Orthorectified imagery and Surface Generation using Pix4Dmatic, Pix4DMapper and Global Mapper.
• Ability to learn and operate GNSS receivers namely Trimble models SPS855, SPS986, R70 and repeaters.
• Ability to learn and operate Trimble SPS930 and SX12 Total Station/Scanners
• Those with an education and/or work-related credential from a secondary or post-secondary educational system will be given preferred interview status (Precision Exams, NOCTE, etc.).
• Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Ability to become familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to get to and from work.

Physical Requirements:

• Able and willing to work long hours including day, night, weekend shifts as needed, and work outside of normal hours.
• Able to walk, lift, reach, stoop, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
• Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
• Able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
• Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, and the operation of equipment.
