You will shape, build, and ship the Onboard AI web platform end-to-end—from concept through deployment—working closely with users, product leadership, and company founders.You'll be highly hands-on: identifying customer needs, designing elegant solutions, writing code, and shipping fast and reporting directly to the CEO - a multitime healthtech founder. As our first senior engineering hire, you will play a critical role in defining engineering culture, velocity, and best practices working alongside the AI team with engineers and PhDs from Stanford and Harvard. What You'll DoParticipate in full lifecycle product development—from customer insight to production deploymentLead architecture and implementation of new features and platform capabilitiesCollaborate directly with users to translate feedback into intuitive, scalable solutionsEstablish and uphold software engineering best practices, code quality, and testing standardsPartner with product leadership to define roadmap and align technical impact with business valueLeverage AI-assisted development tools to amplify productivity and maintain high velocityExercise unbounded curiosity about the 'why' before building anythingCore RequirementsDeep Ruby on Railsexperience (> 5yrs seems like a good floor). We make heavy use of Hotwireand Turbo, so that's required experience as well. The ideal candidate is excited about this: Rails has gotten wonderful again.- This is a full stack role, meaning you'll be responsible for making the frontend look nice as well as the backend. We use Tailwindwith ViewComponents.- Product minded.Or maybe even product-obsessed. We're a small team, and as the lead engineer, you'll give life to our product. You'll talk to customers and transform their problems, feedback, and questions into delightful features.- We're deployed to Heroku, so you should be experienced in the care and feeding of a Heroku application.- You should come in with some strong opinions on how to leverage AI coding tools. The ideal candidate keeps up to date with both the capabilities of the tools as well as how to best use them. (Have you been debating whether to replace your MCPs with skills? That's that type of candidate we're looking for.)- On the topic of LLMs, you should also have experience in building AI into your apps. We leverage both Anthropic and Claude APIswithin our product.
