Summary:

The Sr. Safety Specialist develops and manages the company's safety regulatory compliance – OSHA, NFPA, etc. The nature of work involves data collection, field assessments, research, document/technical writing, regulatory training, management of regulatory safety & health programs, public health programs, and administrative duties. Operation areas include, but are not limited to, lodging, meetings & events, culinary, food and beverage, warehouse, construction, maintenance activities, Golf, and commercial laundry operations.

This position also assists with a wide range of routine assignments in specialty areas in environmental, health, and safety. Assist and support Health and Safety leaders to drive strategies, activities, and decision-making processes. This position will upkeep efforts to reduce losses by identifying and anticipating hazards, performing risk assessments, and implementing, managing, and monitoring effective processes that prevent unacceptable risks and regulatory non-compliance. They will lead and assist in the development and implementation of initiatives for improving internal and external safety programs and risk control processes for the protection of associates, guests, and company assets; lead and support the implementation of necessary programs and procedures to appropriately manage processes in the administration and reduction of regulatory compliance, public health, worker's compensation, general liability, automobile, and other losses.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and manages compliance programs in line with OSHA, NFPA, other regulations, and public health.
  • Reviews and if needed revises programs annually to ensure accuracy and compliance. Programs such as: Confined Space Entry, Work at Heights, Hazardous Energy Control, Hearing and Respiratory Protection, Arc Flash Safety, Legionella Prevention, Food Safety, etc.
  • Serve as a competent level trainer for regulatory training. Provide safety compliance and non-compliance training to small and large groups.
  • Manage decision-making and all aspects of the compliance process: regulatory compliance assessments, technical writing of written programs, field regulatory training, annual field assessments, etc.
  • Develops and maintains a standardized safety train-the-trainer program for regulatory and high-risk work training.
  • Partner with HR on tracking all associate compliance training.
  • Communicate and distribute the annual compliance calendar, monthly safety talks, etc.
  • Be an integral part of the identification and control of High Severity/Low Frequency and High Frequency/Low Severity exposures.
  • Monitor/audit the status and effectiveness of various loss prevention programs, strategies, tasks, etc.
  • Partner with leadership in conducting field safety work/walks to mitigate occupational health and safety risks.
  • Assists in accident investigations, preventative recommendations, and corrective action plans.
  • Assist in auditing, tracking, and trending various types of losses to implement sustainable processes and procedures to curtail future losses, injuries, etc.
  • Monitor accident investigation processes, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures.
  • Assist in the audit/review of workplace injury incident reports and various other loss reports.
  • Help coordinate post-injury incident investigations.
  • Collect data, analyze data, and create reports, recommendations, and communications.
  • Develop and maintain tools for internal and external customers for efficient and effective safety/prevention/compliance processes.
  • Assist dept. leadership in the planning, development, and execution of strategies for a comprehensive safety program.
  • Support dept. leadership to drive strategies, activities, and decision-making processes.
  • Assist the Risk Management and Safety team in accomplishing tasks and duties.
  • Be self-driven and consistently exhibit a positive attitude, commitment to the team and company, and the Pillars of our Strength.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Collaborate effectively across departments and levels of the organization.
  • Participate in department meetings, staff meetings, and other related activities.
  • Complete the identified, required, or assigned training timely and apply acquired knowledge and/or skills.
  • Help coordinate post-injury incident investigations.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Research, create, and implement Standard Operating procedures, guidelines, etc.
  • Follow safe working practices and have a thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Driving to and from appointments.
  • Assist leadership on administrative and clerical tasks.
  • Any other responsibilities assigned by leaders

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Required professional-level understanding of OSHA regulatory compliance, application, and field experience of occupational safety programs.
  • OSHA 10/30 General Industry required.
  • At least 5 to 10 years in occupational and public safety required.
  • At least 5 to 10 years in the lodging/hospitality industry is required
  • 5 years of training/presentation instructor required. 10 years preferred.
  • At least 5 years of technical/program writing, and program auditing required.
  • At least 5 to 10 years in a leadership role preferred.
  • Ability to lift- up to 25 lbs. consistently and 50 lbs. infrequently
  • Must be able to legally work in the USA.

Education and Certification(s)/License(s):

  • Associate's degree in Health & Safety field preferred.
  • Safety certifications such as COSS, COSM, BCPS designations, etc. preferred.
