Cain Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) organization with the mission of providing exceptional visual arts, performing arts, and social experiences to the Lake Norman Region of North Carolina. Founded in 2016, the organization operates two arts facilities in downtown Cornelius, and provides programs in arts education, performing arts, and community impact. It is funded through ticket sales, class and education tuition, philanthropic gifts, and local, state, and federal government grants.

Position Summary

The Ceramics Studio Manager oversees the daily operations of the new Cain Center Ceramics Studio, ensuring a vibrant, safe, and well-organized environment. Responsibilities include managing relationships with instructors and students, promoting clay sales, coordinating class schedules, developing standard operating practices, and enforcing policies and safety procedures. This role blends administrative leadership with community building, fostering strong connections among faculty and students. The ideal candidate will have a fine arts background with ceramics experience, excellent communication skills, and a collaborative spirit suited to a dynamic, creative workplace.

The role is considered part-time, year-round, and non-exempt. This is an on-site position, averaging 20-30 hours per week, with flexible scheduling to accommodate occasional evening and weekend classes. The Ceramics Studio Manager will report to the Associate Director of Education.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for all aspects of day-to-day studio operations, including but not limited to the following:

CLASSES

  • Maintain studio set-up, organization, and cleaning
  • Create and manage class schedules
  • Provide support to instructors
  • Load, unload, and fire electric kilns
  • Mix glazes and clay

SAFETY

  • Train all users in the use of studio equipment and safety
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of studio materials, promoting a safe and organized work environment

MATERIALS

  • Assist with inventory management
  • Assist with unloading clay and supplies deliveries

OTHER

  • Supervise Ceramics Studio Assistant Manager
  • Focus on continual improvement of knowledge of ceramics materials, studio organization and management
  • Other duties as assigned

Professional Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts or related field; or equivalent professional experience
  • 3+ years of experience in all aspects of ceramics studio operations, including glaze materials, proper mixing (both glazes and clay) protocols and hazards
  • Experience loading and firing electric kilns
  • Experience with CRM and POS systems for class registration and supply sales
  • Supervisory experience

Physical Requirements

  • Consistently lift at least 30 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds, from ground to shoulder
  • Bend, sit, stand, push, pull, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity

COMPENSATION

Wage for this position is $18.50 per hour.

The Ceramics Studio Manager is a Part-Time, Non-Exempt Employee.
