Fleet and Maintenance Manager

A Fleet and Maintenance Manager oversee the maintenance and repair of a company's vehicles and heavy equipment, ensuring they are safe, operational, and cost-effective. Key duties include developing and managing preventative maintenance schedules, tracking vehicle data like mileage and fuel consumption, and overseeing the acquisition and disposal of vehicles and heavy equipment. This role also involves managing maintenance staff, controlling costs, and ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations.

Core responsibilities:

  • Diesel Equipment maintenance and repair:

Implement and manage a comprehensive preventive maintenance program, schedule regular inspections, and coordinate repairs to minimize downtime.

  • Staff management:

Supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance personnel, set work priorities, and conduct performance reviews.

  • Budget and cost control:

Develop and manage the maintenance budget, track expenses, analyze operational costs (like fuel), and research ways to increase efficiency.

  • Inventory and procurement:

Manage spare parts inventory, order parts and supplies, and assist in purchasing new vehicles, ensuring they meet company needs and budget.

  • Compliance and safety:

Ensure the fleet adheres to all federal, state, and local regulations, including safety standards, environmental guidelines, and driver-related compliance.

  • Data management and reporting:

Track vehicle usage, maintenance history, and performance data. Generate reports for management on fleet status, costs, and progress.

Key skills and qualifications:

  • Technical knowledge:

Proficiency in heavy equipment repair procedures, maintenance management software, and relevant safety regulations.

  • Leadership and communication:

Strong ability to supervise staff, collaborate with other departments, and communicate plans effectively with both employees and management.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills:

Ability to analyze fleet performance data, identify issues, and implement effective solutions.

  • Organizational skills:

Excellent time management and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks and demands.

  • Experience:

Typically requires several years of experience in vehicle maintenance or fleet management, often with a bachelor's degree in a related field.

  • Other requirements:

A valid driver's license is required, along with the ability to lift heavy objects, and CDL driver's license is preferred.
