Overview

E2 Consulting Engineers, Inc. is seeking an experienced Electric Distribution Designer / Planner to support electric distribution design and planning activities for the San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) territory. This position will play a key role in delivering safe, reliable, and efficient design packages for overhead and underground distribution projects, including system hardening, capacity upgrades, and wildfire mitigation initiatives. The successful candidate will report to the distribution engineering manager.

Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed design packages for 12 kV and below overhead and underground electric distribution systems, consistent with SDG&E design standards, manuals, and work processes.
  • Perform field site assessments and walkdowns to collect necessary data for design development.
  • Prepare construction drawings, bill of materials, cost estimates, and work order packages.
  • Analyze system load requirements, equipment ratings, and customer service needs to determine optimal design solutions.
  • Coordinate with SDG&E planners, project managers, environmental and permitting teams, and other stakeholders to ensure alignment on project scope and requirements.
  • Support permitting activities, including preparation of permit drawings and supporting documentation for local agencies.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety codes, engineering standards, and regulatory requirements, including CPUC rules and fire threat mitigation standards.
  • Track and manage design progress and documentation in SDG&E systems (e.g., SAP, GIS, and related tools).
  • Provide design clarifications and support during construction and closeout phases.
Qualifications

Required

  • Education:
    • Associate degree or equivalent technical training in electrical design, engineering technology, drafting, or related field.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in electric distribution design and planning for a utility or utility contractor.
    • Proficiency in overhead and underground design standards and construction practices.
    • Familiarity with SDG&E standards and design tools is strongly preferred.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or equivalent CAD software.
    • Working knowledge of GIS systems and work management tools (SAP experience preferred).
    • Understanding of NESC, CPUC G.O. 95/128, and other applicable codes.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Valid driver's license and ability to travel locally for site visits.
    • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and quality.

Preferred

  • Experience supporting SDG&E distribution programs, including Fire Hardening or Undergrounding Programs.
  • Knowledge of SDG&E permitting requirements and local agency processes.
  • Experience preparing projects for CPUC High Fire Threat District compliance.

Pay band

  • $75,000 - $85,000   Entry-level or Associate Designer
  • $95,000 - $115,000 Experience designers
  • $125,000+ highly specialized  or lead roles with project management duties.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

Salary range for this position is $75,000 - $125,000.  The starting salary will be commensurate with skill level, education, experience, and working environment.
