Pay Rate: $40/hr - $46/hr (depending on experience)

Position Summary
The
R&D Scientist II
reports directly to the
R&D Manager
and is responsible for delivering technical excellence in the area of applied material and chemical sciences within the SM R&D organization. This role supports innovation and product development initiatives, including material supplier interactions, feasibility studies, and design verification/validation for blood collection devices.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent the R&D function as an Extended Team member in support of large technology and product development programs.
- Design and execute experiments that support development, verification, and evidence generation efforts across assigned projects.
- Document and build technical knowledge; explore and recommend solution concepts and principles with guidance.
- Support product development workstreams under guidance, including requirements management, design verification, and design transfer to manufacturing.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Engineering, Marketing, Medical Affairs, Manufacturing, Quality, and Regulatory Affairs to ensure program success.
- Contribute to intellectual property development through patent applications and invention disclosures.
- Work under general and specific direction from management to develop approaches and solutions to technical challenges.
- Adhere to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and lab operational procedures, maintaining laboratory settings and equipment functionality.
- Mentor and train junior team members while fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Travel as required for conferences, manufacturing site visits, and customer meetings.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of
polymer formulation, processing, and structure-property relationships
. - Experience handling clinical specimens (particularly human blood) is preferred; bloodborne pathogen safety training will be provided.
- Proficiency in
Microsoft Office
; experience with
statistical analysis tools
is a plus. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across complex team structures.
- Strong learning agility and initiative to develop technical competencies.
- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and able to manage hands-on laboratory work in a fast-paced environment.
Education and Experience
Required:
- B.S. or higher in
Materials Science, Chemistry, or related engineering discipline - Minimum
2 years
of direct laboratory experience
Preferred:
- M.S. or higher in
Materials Science, Chemistry, or related engineering discipline - Minimum
3 years
of direct laboratory experience
