Through outstanding clinical skills and respect for the physiologic birth process, the clinic nurse is a collaborative team member who works in clinic and facilitates birth in a freestanding birth center under the direct supervision of certified nurse-midwives.
A qualified candidate will have a passionate commitment to families who choose out-of-hospital birth, as well as be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and have a current Minnesota RN license.
FTE Range: .8-1.0
Responsibilities:
- Work directly with CNM to provide labor support and intrapartum nursing care to low-risk birthing individuals.
- Provide immediate postpartum nursing care and ongoing assessment of mother-baby dyad (including NRP if needed or other emergency management under direction of CNM).
- Provide breastfeeding assessment, support, and assistance.
- Assess patients' readiness for discharge and provide discharge education.
- Clean and restock birth room.
- Conduct home visits 24-48 hours after birth, consulting with CNM as needed.
- Teach Early Home Care class to third trimester families to prepare them for early discharge.
- Staff clinic shifts in both Minneapolis and St. Paul birth centers
- See patients for nurse visits, including blood draws or other specimen collection, blood pressure checks, hearing screens, and other clinical tasks within the nursing scope of practice as ordered by CNM.
- Answer the nurse line and respond to patient voicemails.
- Perform lab draws, NST set-up, blood pressure checks, spinning and preparing labs, sending referrals, communicating with patients, etc.
- Review lab results.
- Co-facilitate Postpartum Circle Care alongside midwife.
- Complete required charting and clinical documentation.
- Attend scheduled meetings, drills, and outreach events.
- Other administrative duties to be completed during clinic or call shifts may include special projects (e.g. inventory, reporting, outreach, marketing) and will vary among individual interest and project availability.
Qualifications:
- Current RN license to practice nursing in Minnesota
- Current NRP certification
- Current BLS certification
- Must be located within 30 minutes of both birth centers and be accessible to on-call CNMs by phone.
- Proficient use of EMR; ability to learn Athena charting system.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and walk up and down stairs repeatedly.
- Commitment to the philosophy of out-of-hospital birth.
- Experience in L&D nursing or other birthwork HIGHLY preferred; certifications and training in lactation is an advantage. Must be competent and confident to practice independently in birth center setting alongside a midwife.
- Demonstrates competence in interpersonal communication, clinical nursing skills, and cooperative teamwork.
- Flexibility in adapting to the ever-changing healthcare environment.
