Position Description: Facilities Custodian/Maintenance
The Facilities Custodian performs regular custodial and maintenance duties; troubleshoots, performs minor repairs and makes recommendations for larger repairs; implements set up and takedown for a variety of church and community events; resolves problems to ensure efficient and safe operations; and responds to special requests and needs to best serve the church.
Schedule and Hours
This is an up to 10 hour/week position that requires a flexible working schedule to accommodate the changing needs of the church. This position does not qualify for health or pension benefits. It is a non-exempt position with variable hours.
What will you do?
- Perform duties on weekly, monthly and annual checklists: For example, weekly inventory of paper products and cleaning supplies, with ordering as needed, checking furnace pans weekly during AC season, monthly cleaning and inspect of ice machine, opening two main outside water valves in the spring, draining and closing outside water valves in the fall; blowing out leaves in rain gutters in the spring and fall.
- Conduct regular inspections of interior of building; replace light bulbs, complete touch-up painting, troubleshoot and repair any minor mechanical, plumbing and electrical maintenance issues. Inform manger and/or Church Property Ministry Team of any major issues.
- Maintain clean and safe facilities outside of the building including, but not limited to, inspection of church grounds for litter, maintain professional outside appearance of building, and perform minor repairs, such as yearly caulking around windows, checking door sills, etc. Inform manager and/or Church Property Ministry Team of any major issues.
- Remove snow (when less than 2 inches has fallen) on public sidewalks around church, church walkways, entrances and steps leading to church not covered by contracted service. Apply snow melting chemicals on walkways and entrances as appropriate.
- Ensure grass, trees, shrubs and flowers are maintained, in coordination with the Church Property Ministry Team.
- Identify issues/concerns and general upkeep items for the facility.
- Respond to service requests and coordinate resources.
- Implement the set up and take down of furniture and equipment for church and community events.
- Address church custodial needs for weddings, funerals and special events.
- Complete quality work with accountability for timeframes based on facility and team member needs.
- Engage with the Church Property Ministry Team and attend meetings.
Job Qualifications
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Relevant work experience desired.
- Handyman skills required.
- Strong organizational skills (record keeping, time management, multi-tasking, follow-up, etc.)
- Ability to work without direct supervision and manage time efficiently and effectively. Timely performance of duties is critical.
- Ability to communicate verbally, electronically and in writing, and work with a variety of personalities within the staff and church membership.
- Adaptable to changing work conditions and flexible work hours including coverage for special events as needed (weddings, funerals, etc.).
- Ability to safely lift 30-50 pounds and climb and perform ladder work up to 15 feet high.
- Individual must have reliable transportation.
- Successfully pass a background check.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Office maintenance environment with occasional lifting of over 50 pounds required. Maintenance and repair duties require ability to perform bending, lifting, twisting, and reaching tasks as well as fine motor skill tasks. Corrected vision and hearing in normal range required for reading containers, diagnosing problems and interacting with others.
Farmington Lutheran Church, in Farmington Minnesota, is a growing and thriving ELCA congregation in the Twin Cities southern metro area. We are part of the St. Paul Area Synod. The church has grown to more than 2,500 baptized members. We have over 600 students in the church school and confirmation programs. Average weekly attendance is 400 people.
