POSITION OVERVIEW
Lower School Substitute Teachers at The Westminster Schools provide meaningful instruction, maintain a positive classroom environment, and promote student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. They are attuned to the developmental, social, and emotional needs of students and bring an engaging and inclusive approach to teaching.
In fulfilling Westminster's mission to "develop the whole person for college and for life," substitute teachers partner with colleagues and support a dynamic curriculum that nurtures curiosity, critical thinking, and a love of learning. Westminster teachers serve not only as educators but also as mentors and role models who inspire students to become lifelong learners and conscientious citizens.
Supervisor: Head of Lower School
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Position Status: Salaried, Exempt, Part-time, Temporary, As needed
Hours of Work: Standard work week; typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
The requirements below represent the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for a successful candidate.
- Bachelor's degree required
- Prior teaching experience or experience working with children preferred
- Demonstrated enthusiasm for working with children and fostering their growth
- Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to a positive, inclusive learning environment
- Strong writing, organizational, administrative, and communication skills
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a cooperative spirit
In addition to teaching experience, successful candidates demonstrate a love of working with children, an engaging teaching style, the ability to interact well with parents and colleagues, and a willingness to create and promote an inclusive learning environment.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide instruction, manage the classroom environment, and promote student learning in alignment with lesson plans or program objectives
- Maintain a supportive and respectful classroom atmosphere that encourages collaboration and critical reflection
- Demonstrate subject matter knowledge and the ability to adapt lessons to students' learning needs
- Incorporate technology effectively into instruction and classroom management
- Communicate and collaborate effectively with students, colleagues, and parents
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support the Lower School program
- Perform other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out; and smell. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become CPR, AED, and First Aid Certified is required.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and may frequently walk on slippery or uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus.
TRAVEL
Travel is primarily local during the regular business day.
