Trailer Mechanic Description

This individual is responsible for and coordinates all activities within the Truck Shop ensuring that proper safety, OSHA, EPA, and Federal DOT guidelines are followed.  This individual is ultimately responsible for all maintenance and repairs on all fleet trailers. Occasional work may be necessary on tractors, forklifts, and company automobiles. 

Trailer Mechanic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Diagnosis, repair, and preventative maintenance of all fleet trailers
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance activities with the Lead Diesel Tech; provide feedback regarding equipment availability
  • Meet DOT inspection requirements on all applicable fleet units
  • Order parts and supplies and manage the relationships with outside suppliers as necessary
  • Operates and maintains a complete set of hand, power, shop tools, and computerized diagnostic /test equipment used in the automotive and truck/trailer repair trade.
  • Meet OSHA standards on safety /work practices; meet EPA standards on chemical handling /waste disposal
  • Maintain work, time, material, and equipment maintenance logs and records
  • Keep the truck shop in a neat and orderly condition
  • Support and follow all established company policies and procedures including the safety program and good housekeeping
  • Maintain positive and productive communications with all relationships
  • Must follow all company policies and procedures
  • Must be trained on Box-Board Products, Inc. Employee Practices for AIB Compliance (a.k.a. Good Manufacturing Practices or G.M.P.'s); must follow all Good Manufacturing Practices (G.M.P.'s)
  • Additional duties as assigned by Management
Trailer Mechanic Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • At least three to five years experience in fleet / diesel diagnosis and repair preferred
  • DOT qualified to inspect tractors and trailers
  • CDL license preferred
  • Master-level ASE Mechanic Certification is required; a State of North Carolina adjustment license is preferred. As regulations change, employees are expected to obtain the State-mandated certifications required in order to work on certain vehicles, equipment, or in handling materials.
  • High level of mechanical skills and knowledge of forklift, tractor/trailer, and automotive repair
  • Knowledge of practices, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in the diagnosis, repair, preventative maintenance, and modification of a wide variety of technical equipment, including automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and trailers
  • Knowledge of procedures used in the repair and maintenance of gas/diesel-powered vehicles and equipment
  • Knowledge of regulations, standards and guidelines pertaining to the work, including state and federal inspection guidelines
  • Knowledge of current technology in repairing and diagnosing vehicles, equipment and their component systems
  • Knowledge of safe work practices, including handling of hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of basic office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and supporting software applications
  • Ability to diagnose and repair all types of problems with all fleet vehicles and automobiles
  • Ability to use the tools and test equipment associated with the automotive and heavy equipment trade
  • Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of shop timekeeping/repair records
  • Ability to maintain computerized records in accordance to DOT standards
  • Ability to perform safe operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand, power, shop tools and equipment common to the field of automotive and mechanical equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Ability to work under steady pressure with frequent interruptions
  • Ability to weld and use a torch
  • Ability to frequently travel up and down a flight of stairs
  • Must be able to read, understand and communicate English instructions; written and verbal
