The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a skilled and motivated person to fill our Traffic Signal Technician (Electronic Technical Specialist II) position with Region Two in Salt Lake City, Utah. In this position you will install, repair and maintain various electronic equipment used by UDOT to Keep Utah Moving.

Principal Duties

As the Electronic Technical Specialist II, you will work in a lab and in the field in an outdoor environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions and mechanical, electrical, and traffic hazards. You will perform electronics tasks including:

  • Installation, maintenance, programming and repair of traffic signal systems including traffic signal cabinets, radar detection systems, school flashers, accessible pedestrian signals, highway lighting equipment, wiring, conduit, etc.
  • Respond to reports of malfunctioning traffic signal equipment and troubleshoot and repair equipment in the field.
  • Inspecting traffic signal installations to verify compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and specifications.
  • Operating, maintaining, calibrating, and adjusting specialized equipment.
  • Maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Driving and operating a bucket truck.
  • Be available to be on-call and work after hours (nights and weekends) on a rotating basis.
  • Any other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The qualified candidate for this position is someone who:

  • Is able and willing to report to the Region Two office, located at 2010 S 2760 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84104, within a 30-minute response time.
  • Has at least two years of professional electrical/electronics work experience or electronics education (or a combination of both).
  • Has an International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level II certification.
  • Has a valid driver's license.
  • Has a working knowledge that includes a combination of the following: electronics and electrical systems, traffic signal technology, and traffic signal construction.
  • Is proficient using computers and computer systems.
  • A willingness and ability to be on-call and work after hours on a regular basis.
  • Must complete the UDOT Traffic Signal and ITS Training within six months of hire.

This position may be filled as an Electronic Technical Specialist I (salary range $ $34.06)for applicants with less than two years of experience/education in electrical/electronics and those without an IMSA Level II certification. You must have IMSA level I certification or the ability to obtain within one year after hire AND obtain IMSA level II within two years. Certification and training provided by UDOT. You must complete the UDOT Traffic Signal & ITS Training within six months after hire.

Preferences

Preference may be given to applicants with at least one of the following:

  • Associate's degree, or higher, in an electrical or electronic technology field.
  • Journeyman Electrical License.
  • IMSA level II or higher certification.
  • At least four years related education and electrical/electronics experience (combined).

  • This position is required to be on-call and work after hours on a regular basis.

  • Working Conditions: Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with power voltages up to 600V or hazardous chemicals, near live traffic, etc.
  • Physical Requirements: Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time, crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
