The Head Underwriter – Life leads the underwriting strategy, governance, and execution for the company's life insurance portfolio. Reporting to the CRO, this role drives disciplined risk selection, regulatory compliance, and profitability across the business. The leader will oversee a team of underwriters and collaborate with actuarial, product, and distribution partners to support sustainable growth and sound underwriting practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the life underwriting strategy and risk appetite.
  • Ensure alignment with corporate goals, regulatory standards, and profitability targets.
  • Lead and develop the underwriting team; establish clear authorities, guidelines, and quality controls.
  • Review complex or high-value applications and ensure consistent, timely risk decisions.
  • Partner with Product, Actuarial, and Distribution teams to enhance product competitiveness and portfolio performance.
  • Drive automation, data analytics, and process improvements to improve underwriting efficiency.
  • Oversee compliance, governance, and reinsurance coordination; monitor emerging risks and recommend actions.
  • Represent underwriting in internal committees and industry forums.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Business, Finance, or Actuarial Science.
  • 10–15 years of progressive life underwriting experience, including 5+ years in leadership.
  • Fluent in English and Spanish.
  • Strong knowledge of mortality risk, reinsurance, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Designations such as FALU, FLMI, or CLU preferred.
  • Proven record in underwriting transformation and automation.
