About the Program
Mount Laurel Animal Hospital is currently seeking motivated students to join our Veterinary Technician Externship Program. This hands-on learning experience is designed to help you develop the essential skills needed to excel as a veterinary technician. Externs are paired with experienced technicians during each shift, actively participating in the hospital's daily operations while gaining exposure to a wide variety of specialties. You will work alongside highly skilled colleagues, many with top certifications in their fields, and gain experience with advanced medical technology. In addition to departmental rotations, externs are encouraged to attend weekly rounds, lectures, and hands-on wet labs hosted by our onsite training team.

Department Rotations May Include:

• Primary Care – wellness exams, preventative medicine, urgent care, elective surgeries, dentistry

• Emergency & Critical Care – triage, patient stabilization, intensive monitoring

• Surgery & Anesthesia – orthopedic, soft tissue, and emergency surgeries; anesthesia monitoring

• Internal Medicine – complex diagnostic cases, extended care, treatment planning

• Oncology – cancer diagnosis and treatment protocols

• Ophthalmology – ocular conditions and eye surgeries, including cataracts

• Radiology – sedation, radiographs, ultrasound, CT, and MRI exposure

• Neurology – support in diagnostics and patient care

Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited, in-person veterinary technician program

• Available for the duration required by your school's externship program

• Strong communication skills, professionalism, and willingness to learn

• Enthusiastic, team-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment

• Please note: Students enrolled in online-only programs are not eligible

• Current academic partners include Camden County College, Manor College, and Harcum College

Responsibilities

• Assist with patient restraint, nursing care, and treatment preparation

• Observe and participate in diagnostic procedures, anesthesia monitoring, and surgical preparation

• Support the medical team with sample collection, record keeping, and patient monitoring

• Learn and apply proper safety, sanitation, and infection control protocols

• Communicate professionally with clients and team members

• Rotate through multiple departments to gain exposure to various specialties and hospital operations

• Demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and a commitment to learning in a fast-paced environment
