Patient Care Technician – Resource Pool (Full-Time)

Location: UPMC Williamsport

Status: Full-Time

Shift: Rotating Days & Nights (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM / 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM)

Schedule: Every third weekend and 2–3 holidays per year

Purpose:

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) is a vital member of the healthcare team, providing direct patient care and support under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role contributes to the delivery of high-quality care through clinical tasks, communication, and collaboration with other team members.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Direct Patient Care:

    Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning, and transporting. Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
  • Clinical Support:

    Perform core nursing assistant responsibilities such as vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, intake & output, weights, specimen collection, Foley care, and telemetry monitor application.

    Competently perform at least four advanced tasks including: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing changes, Foley catheter removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scans, straight catheterization, or IV catheter removal.
  • Communication & Teamwork:

    Maintain effective communication with the healthcare team and other departments. Respond to call lights, phones, and assist with meal trays and patient transport. Build respectful and professional relationships with patients and colleagues.
  • Safety & Compliance:

    Adhere to all hospital policies and procedures, including infection control and safety protocols. Report equipment malfunctions promptly.
  • Documentation & Clerical Tasks:

    Accurately document patient care in the medical record. Complete clerical duties as needed and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Education & Development:

    Provide patient and family instruction under RN direction. Identify learning needs and seek feedback to improve performance. Participate in self-review and department quality initiatives.
  • Advanced Skills (as needed):

    May perform additional advanced skills based on department needs, such as:
  • Phlebotomy/venipuncture
  • Peripheral IV removal
  • Indwelling Foley catheter removal
  • Basic arrhythmia recognition
  • NG tube clamping/removal
  • 12-lead EKG

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Must also have either:
  • a) 1 Year of general healthcare experience, OR
  • b) 6 months of experience as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience, OR
  • c) enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
  • d) completion of a bachelors degree in a health sciences field.
  • Successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class
  • Successful completion of eRecord training.
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:

CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
