SUMMARY

The City of Charlotte's Innovation & Technology Department is seeking a skilled and motivated Technology Support Coordinator to provide advanced technical support for our public safety agencies, including Police, Fire, and Animal Care & Control. This position serves as a technical resource and liaison between I&T and departmental customers—configuring, deploying, and maintaining technology that keeps first responders connected and operational.

The ideal candidate combines strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities with hands-on experience in IT hardware, software, networking, and vehicle-based technology systems.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you'll be part of an agile team that keeps Public Safety technology running smoothly across the city. You'll balance hands-on technical work with coordination and communication that help our Public Safety Fleet stay connected and mission-ready.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact between Innovation & Technology and assigned Public Safety departments—building strong partnerships and responsive support.

  • Install, configure, and maintain computers, mobile data terminals, modems, routers, and related technology, including in-vehicle systems and wiring.

  • Troubleshoot complex hardware, software, and connectivity issues with persistence and attention to detail.

  • Manage and track equipment through its full lifecycle, ensuring assets, configurations, and documentation remain accurate and current.

  • Communicate system updates, outages, and process changes clearly to departmental users and leadership.

  • Assist with small-scale projects, technology upfits, and process improvements that enhance efficiency and reliability.

  • Contribute to team development and training by sharing knowledge, documenting procedures, and helping shape a consistent service approach.

  • Support technology budget planning and coordination as requested.

  • Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and five (5) years of related IT experience; or
  • Associate's degree and three (3) years of related IT experience; or

  • Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of related IT experience.

  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong working knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, networking, and vehicle wiring, including DC power distribution and data cabling principles.

  • Advanced troubleshooting and analysis skills.

  • Familiarity with Cellular wireless technologies and connectivity tools.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills.

  • Ability to balance multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team.

  • Commitment to exceptional customer service and collaborative problem solving.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with in-vehicle wiring, including DC power distribution and data cabling for modems, routers, and other peripheral installations.

  • Skilled in the use of voltmeters, and other testing equipment.

  • Comfortable using power tools and hand tools for equipment installation.

  • Hands-on experience supporting Sierra Wireless MG90 and CradlePoint mobile routers.

  • Familiarity with Panasonic Toughbook CF-33, CF-G2, and FZ-55 laptops or similar ruggedized devices.

  • Experience supporting technology in public safety, field, or mobile environments.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in both office and field environments. Occasional travel to police, fire, and other public safety sites and vehicles is required. Exposure to outdoor conditions, confined spaces, and shop or vehicle environments may occur.

Why Join Us

Join a forward-thinking technology team that supports some of Charlotte's most essential public-service operations. You'll have the opportunity to apply your technical expertise in meaningful ways, strengthen the reliability of public-safety systems, and contribute to a culture of innovation and community impact.
