Job Title: Histology Technician

Location: 2799 W GRAND BLVD, Detroit, MI 48202

Duration: 13 Weeks (Contract) with the possible extension

Shift: Afternoon shift 3pm-11:30pm M-F

Job Summary -

Under limited supervision, the Histology Technician performs routine histology techniques on surgical, autopsy, neuropathology, and research tissue following standardized laboratory procedures. The role includes operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation, preparation of reagents, and ensuring quality control standards are met.

Key Responsibilities -

  • Prepare and cut surgical, autopsy, research, and neuropathology tissue specimens using a rotary microtome.
  • Embed tissue samples in accordance with established laboratory protocols.
  • Perform routine staining, coverslipping, and accurate labeling of tissue slides.
  • Conduct special stains under supervision according to standardized procedures.
  • Operate, clean, and maintain all laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Assist in onboarding or demonstrating tasks to new or less experienced staff.
  • Prepare, mix, and maintain laboratory solutions, including stains and special fixatives.
  • Maintain and document all QC, CAP, QA records, including instrument function and maintenance logs.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure proper stock of reagents and supplies.
  • Adhere strictly to Standard Work procedures and report deviations for corrective actions.
  • Participate in data collection, quality assurance, and continuous improvement activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities -

  • Near Vision Acuity: Ability to see clearly at close distances (20 inches or less).
  • Depth Perception: Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships accurately.
  • Accommodation: Ability to adjust focus when viewing objects at varying distances.
  • Color Vision: Ability to distinguish and identify colors essential for staining procedures.

Required Education & Experience -

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant histology experience.
  • Associate's Degree with coursework in Anatomy, Biology, and/or Chemistry,

OR

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Microbiology, Biology, or related field.

Certifications -

  • HT or HTL (ASCP) required.
