The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary

The Lead Nurse Practitioner for the Department of Neurological Surgery will collaborate with CUMC Neurosurgery leadership including Department Administrator/CFO, Department Chairman, and Director of Practice/Clinical Operations, Practice Manager and Neurosurgeons to ensure oversight of all outpatient services related to the Department of Neurosurgery. This ambulatory nursing leadership position will serve as a key member of the Columbia Neurosurgery leadership team. Position is responsible for nursing practice oversight by organizing and leading the delivery of nursing care for Columbia Department of Neurosurgery Practices. It includes analyzing clinical practice and identifying opportunities to increase quality, safety, effectiveness, and efficiency within primary care; working with Neurosurgery leadership to identify clinical indicators to measure, evaluate, and improve care; maintaining compliance with all federal, state, and local clinical policies, procedures, and regulations; and supervision of Nurse Practitioners and Registered Nurses who provide patient care. Position is accountable for assessing, planning, developing, implementing, and executing strategies and tactics of the Neurosurgery Ambulatory Practices to achieve clinical superiority, quality performance, optimal financial performance, cost efficiency, business growth and market leadership. The Lead Nurse Practitioner will work closely with internal and external stakeholders in the organization to advance population health, care coordination, clinical initiatives, and nursing staff performance and to deliver a practice experience that contributes to positive health outcomes for patients and a work culture of kindness, collaboration, integrity, accountability, and excellence.

This position reports to the Director of Practice/Clinical Operations for the Department of Neurosurgery and is part of the Administrative team.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Provides direct care to patients which demonstrates clinical expertise and advanced knowledge and may perform duties listed in the job description for an NP.
• Supervise and mentor Clinical Staff, facilitate Educational and Professional Growth Opportunities.
• Promotes staff professionalism and performance with coaching, training, and feedback. Mentors others in individual and team accountability, modeling behavior, and demonstrating best practices/techniques.
• Develop initiatives that ensure adequate space and staff are available to meet the need of identified growth; make recommendations for changes to practice site staffing.
• Maintain fiscal responsibility of each clinical site.
• Act as a resource person for divisional leadership in operational matters.
• Oversee special projects and in collaboration with the Department Administration, Director of Practice/Clinical Operations and Practice Manager to strategize on long term planning throughout the Department.
• Create and assist in the implementation of new practice initiatives.
• Represent Neurosurgical Surgery department and institutional meetings regularly and serve as a liaison for NP staff with management and leadership teams in the Department of Neurological Surgery and NYP.
• Serves as the team leader by overseeing various practice optimization projects and engages the management team accordingly. Leads management team to ensure project-related tasks and/or issues are resolved.
• Effectively manage the project and operational teams by using tracking/reporting tools. Determines, monitor and manage key unit metrics, including operational performance indicators, staff productivity, and patient satisfaction. Assists with monthly and ad-hoc practice reports and dashboards.

Strategy

• Accountable for working collaboratively with providers, administrative and clinical managers, and staff to ensure the achievement of practice-wide clinical goals/metrics. Develops all strategies in the area/functions assigned ensuring organizational guidelines and policies are standardized across all clinical sites.
• Develops clinical practice optimization and improvement strategies and utilizes a data-driven methodology to monitor progress. Recommend performance metrics/ensure practices meet objectives.
• Participates as a key member of the Neurosurgery Leadership team.
• Leads clinical staff meetings with Director of Practice/Clinical Operations to align the clinical team with organizational strategy, new initiatives, programs, and policies.
• Collaborates with senior leadership to create and implement change management strategies that support organizational goals and process improvement initiatives. Maximize employee adoption and measure effectiveness. Ensure communication of changes is cascaded throughout the unit and feedback channels are in place. Ensures staff support system is in place. Works with senior leadership to address any escalated concerns and identified risks as needed.
• Leads communication strategy for the unit. Collaborates with senior leadership to develop tools and strategies for effective communication including, but not limited to: informal and formal presentations for various audiences, feedback channels, senior leadership/stakeholder presentations, vendors, etc. Ensures relevant communication is cascaded to the various interest and stakeholder groups as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience; 5 years related experience
• Master's degree in Nursing or equivalent in education and experience required.
• Experience in neurosurgery, neurology, critical care, or emergency department care.
• Current New York State NP and RN license.
• Recent NP graduates are welcome to apply.
• Certification by ANCC, or AANP. DEA certification.
• Must be able to meet credentialing requirements by NYP
• Experience in using EPIC, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
• Ability to perform comprehensive history and physical examination.
• Ability to manage and coordinate a patient caseload.
• Work within a collaborative agreement/protocols with a physician and health care team.
• Demonstrate leadership ability to manage patients and interact effectively with peers and physicians.
• Must have process and program management track record, with demonstrated ability to re-design staffing for greater throughput and productivity combined with cost savings.
• Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate and relate to physician leadership, business leadership, and senior management team and employees at all levels.
• Strong analytic capability and experience in producing in depth reporting and management information tracking operational efficiency, patient care quality, provider workflow efficiency and cost-effective staff management.
• Strong ethics and high level of personal and professional integrity.
• Must demonstrate excellent leadership, team building and well-developed problem-solving skills.
• Must have ability to assess efficiency and implement management initiatives to enhance practice flow processes to improve patient satisfaction, patient care, provider support and profitability.
• Must have ambulatory practice experience working with multiple medical practices.
• Demonstrate leadership abilities with a record of success as an agent of change.
• Must have a thorough understanding of health care delivery in a physician practice model.
• Travel to clinical site(s) for patient care.
