Shop Assistant/Apprentice Construction Services

Location: Tempe, AZ

Job Type: Full-Time

Schedule: Monday–Friday with mandatory every other Saturday (7:00 AM–12:00 PM)

Job Summary

We are seeking a reliable and motivated Shop Assistant/Apprentice to support the daily operations of our construction shop. This role is essential to keeping our field crews productive and safe by assisting with equipment preparation, material handling, inventory organization, and overall shop and yard upkeep. The ideal candidate has a strong work ethic, basic mechanical aptitude, and is eager to learn.

Key Responsibilities

Equipment & Tool Support

  • Clean, inspect, and perform basic maintenance on tools and equipment
  • Assist shop technicians with equipment repairs and jobsite preparation
  • Load and unload tools, materials, and equipment for field crews
  • Ensure tools are properly labeled, stored, and ready for use

Material Handling & Inventory

  • Receive, stage, and organize incoming materials and parts
  • Track inventory levels and report shortages to supervisors
  • Prepare material kits and orders based on job requirements
  • Maintain accurate tool and material check-in/check-out records

Shop & Yard Maintenance

  • Keep shop, yard, and storage areas clean, organized, and safe
  • Dispose of waste, scrap, and recyclable materials properly
  • Assist with general facility maintenance (sweeping, organizing racks, restocking supplies)

Safety

  • Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and OSHA guidelines
  • Report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, or incidents immediately
  • Participate in safety meetings and training

General Duties

  • Maintain cleanliness and efficiency across all shop areas
  • Assist with ad hoc projects and assignments as needed

Qualifications

  • Prior experience in construction, warehouse, or equipment shop environment preferred
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with common construction or shop tools
  • Strong reliability, work ethic, and willingness to learn
  • Ability to work weekends (mandatory every other Saturday shift)
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record preferred

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, or small equipment (training available)

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Ability to routinely lift 50–75 lbs
  • Work primarily in a shop and yard environment
  • Exposure to weather, noise, and construction/shop materials
  • Requires standing, bending, lifting, and physical labor throughout the day
