DESCRIPTION

The School of Biological Sciences is a large and complex school within Academic Affairs and is overseen by the Dean of Biological Sciences with the assistance of Associate and Assistant Deans. BioSci has four academic departments, Cell and Developmental Biology, Ecology Behavior and Evolution, Molecular Biology and Neurobiology with a Shared Services Administration unit supporting the Dean, the School and the four departments. Each department is headed by a Chair who works individually to represent their department, and works collaboratively as a member of the School Council of Chairs (CoC) on the concerns which cross the boundaries of department governance. BioSci reflects broad foci in faculty research and in the academic programs offered by the School. The School has over 100 faculty FTE, ~20 teaching professors, ~50 professional researchers, ~150 postdoctoral scholars, ~55 adjuncts, ~20 Unit 18s, ~145 staff in career/casual titles, and ~425 student workers and volunteers and involves members of ~9 bargaining units. There are approximately ~5,500 undergraduate students enrolled in 8 majors, with annual enrollments of ~30,000 students (~9300 per term); ~350 graduate students with annual enrollments of ~2,400; more than $34 million per annum in extramural funding, and approximately ~$65 million in total annual expenditures. The school occupies space in 10 buildings, totaling 302,000 SF, including class laboratories and instructional support space, research labs, and recharge facilities.

Administers all finance, human resources and facilities and other operational activities for small to mid-sized academic or research program. Administers major program components, and some or all of the program's operational requirements. Develops and organizes conferences and other public forums. Works under direction of Principal Investigator or more senior Academic Program Officer to establish center agenda, funding, objectives.

Strategically, the incumbent contributes to the planning and leadership of the Technology Sandbox, coordinating faculty, staff, and student projects in alignment with school-wide priorities. Collects and analyzes usage data for industry partners, working closely with the Strategic Programs Team to demonstrate impact and guide resource allocation. Fosters relationships with other schools and departments including Physical Sciences, the Jacobs School of Engineering, Health Sciences, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and HDSI to position Sandbox initiatives for growth and ensure efficient use of shared resources.

The incumbent communicates and facilitates collaborative research opportunities across campus and with external for-profit and non-profit partners, enabling innovative applications of the facility's technology. Cultivate active collaborations with other facility directors and principal investigators to enhance campus-wide productivity and synergy. In addition, the incumbent co-hosts seminars and workshops to highlight Sandbox research and promote the facility both internally and externally.

Partners with the Faculty Director, Facility Directors, and Executive Director of Strategic Programs to provide comprehensive budget oversight, including resource allocation, expenditure tracking, and requirement analysis. Participates in both long- and short-term facility planning, identify critical infrastructure needs, and escalate recommendations to ensure alignment with institutional priorities. Process orders and purchases for chemicals, supplies, and equipment, selecting appropriate funding sources and managing budgets in coordination with campus financial support staff.

Acts as the central point of contact for purchases, vendors, safety, and facilities, the incumbent oversees supply chain activities, maintains a clean, compliant work environment, and ensures that all chemical, biological, and equipment inventories are current and properly stored. Coordinates the delivery and installation of scientific instrumentation with faculty leaders, manage user access and training, and serve as the emergency contact for the lab, ensuring all Environmental Health & Safety protocols are followed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with laboratory management, including safety and compliance, supply stream, and technical support.
  • Experience working in an academic environment, interacting collaboratively with industry, academia, and non-profits.
  • Academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Experience assembling communications materials to highlight events, opportunities, and/or other information of value, i.e., newsletter, social media, flyers, webpages.
  • Knowledge of University procurement, contracting, and compliance policies, with the ability to ensure accountability and alignment with institutional standards.
  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.
  • Skill in building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with faculty, departments, and external industry or academic partners.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $88,000 - $161,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $ $77.39

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
