Position Summary
The
General Superintendent
is a senior field leadership role responsible for directing and supervising all aspects of construction operations across multiple project sites. This position ensures projects are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest standards of quality and customer satisfaction. The General Superintendent will lead and mentor project superintendents, coordinate subcontractors and field crews, manage job site logistics, and uphold their reputation for excellence in heavy civil construction.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Project Execution
- Provide overall leadership, direction, and supervision of multiple construction sites and project superintendents.
- Ensure all field activities are executed according to the contract plans, specifications, and client expectations.
- Lead daily site stand-ups, coordinate work sequences, and monitor project progress against schedule and milestones.
- Collaborate with project managers and estimating teams to ensure smooth transitions from preconstruction to field operations.
Safety & Compliance
- Champion a safety-first culture, enforcing company and client safety requirements, including site-specific safety plans.
- Conduct regular job site safety inspections and lead proactive hazard mitigation efforts.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, and maintain high safety and quality standards consistent with company goals.
- Promote active participation in daily safety briefings and reinforce their commitment to zero-incident performance.
Quality & Customer Satisfaction
- Execute work with a focus on quality, precision, and customer expectations for infrastructure, grading, drainage, and concrete.
- Oversee quality control activities and document compliance with project specifications.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and suppliers through professional communication and timely problem resolution.
Team Development & Field Management
- Mentor, develop, and evaluate on-site superintendents and field personnel.
- Ensure field crews are properly staffed, trained, and equipped to perform assigned tasks safely and effectively.
- Coordinate the efficient use of equipment, materials, and labor resources to optimize productivity.
Planning & Coordination
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, and specialty trades to support site work, earthwork, foundation preparation, and other construction activities.
- Set clear expectations for deliverables, inspect field performance, and ensure compliance with schedules and project milestones.
- Communicate daily with the office team regarding progress, challenges, resource needs, and schedule adjustments.
Required Qualifications
- Education:
Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience considered. - Experience:
Minimum 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience with demonstrated supervisory responsibility; prior experience in earthwork, grading, drainage, and structural sitework strongly preferred. - Proven track record of managing complex field operations and delivering projects on time and within budget.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across functional teams.
- In-depth knowledge of construction safety practices, regulatory requirements, and quality standards.
- Ability to travel frequently to job sites and work extended hours as project demands require.
Work Environment
This role requires regular travel to active construction sites, often in varied terrain and weather conditions. The General Superintendent must be able to work outdoors, stand for extended periods, and engage directly with field teams and equipment operations.
