Director of Performing Arts

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Performing Arts is responsible for leading, developing, and enriching the performing arts programming across the community. This role ensures that music, theater, dance, and other expressive arts are integrated into resident life, fostering engagement, creativity, and cultural enrichment. The Director will oversee scheduling, staffing, production, and community outreach, while collaborating with internal departments and external partners to deliver high-quality, inclusive programming for all levels of care.

Strategic Leadership
- Develop and implement a compelling vision for performing arts as a core component of resident life.
- Lead the design and execution of annual performance calendars, including concerts, theater productions, educational lectures and interdisciplinary showcases.
- Collaborate with leadership to align programming with organizational goals and resident needs.
Program Development & Management
- Curate diverse and inclusive performing arts experiences tailored to independent living, assisted living, skilled and memory care residents.
- Supervise staff and contracted artists (e.g., visual arts coordinator, music instructors, drama facilitators).
- Ensure all programming meets high standards of artistic quality, accessibility, and safety.
- Oversee technical needs for all performances including audio visual and recording.
Community Engagement
- Serve as the public face of performing arts within the organization and broader community.
- Build partnerships with local schools, arts organizations, and volunteers to expand programming reach.
- Promote resident participation and volunteerism in arts activities.
Operational Oversight
- Manage budgets, contracts, and scheduling for all performing arts activities.
- Oversee logistics for rehearsals, performances, and special events.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
Staff Leadership
- Provide guidance and support to team members including visual arts coordinators, life enrichment managers, and volunteers.
- Facilitate training and professional development for arts staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations and contribute to hiring decisions.
- Establish a culture of teamwork among managers and inter-departmental collaboration with coaching as needed for development.

Requirements:
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Performing Arts, Arts Administration, or related field (Master's preferred).
- Minimum 5 years of experience in arts programming or administration, preferably in senior living, education, or nonprofit sectors.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Demonstrated leadership in managing multidisciplinary arts programs (preferably with older adults).
- Awareness of community arts partnerships, volunteer resources, and local performers.
- Talent for facilitating resident participation and customizing activities to abilities and interests.
- Ability to collaborate across departments—life enrichment, dining, nursing, resident services, and administration.
- Ability to foster a welcoming, inclusive environment rooted in diversity and equity, where every resident feels valued, respected, and encouraged to participate.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a genuine passion for working with seniors.
- Creative, energetic, and organized, with a talent for inspiring participation and building community.
- Ability to adapt programming for a wide range of cognitive and physical abilities.
- Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills.
- Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with patients and employees.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS: The physical activities of this position constantly require effective talking, hearing, sitting, walking and standing functions. The position also often involves sedentary work where sitting is required most of the time, with occasional standing or walking. The position also often requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Must be able to perform activities with close visual acuity, such as reading a computer screen and reading print material. The functions of this position are conducted in a temperature-controlled environment.
OSHA Exposure Category: Category III – Position includes tasks that involve no exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues; would not be required to perform Category I tasks.
INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS: The occupant of this position must be able to perform the responsibilities of the position well under pressure. The position requires adaptability to performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure. This position requires the ability to deal with and find resolution to problems and maintain a productive working relationship with employees and may be interrupted frequently to meet the needs and requests of others. It also requires adaptability to fluctuate between priorities daily while being responsive to needs as they arise.
