Job Title: Maintenance Specialist - Carpentry/Cabinet-Making

Supervisor: Director of Support Services

Classification: Classified

FLSA Status: Nonexempt     

Days:

Summary:  Performs skilled work as a journeyman craftsman in maintaining, constructing, and repairing District buildings and equipment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates woodworking equipment in support of woodworking, cabinet, and construction projects.
  • Performs general maintenance and repairs of furniture and buildings (including roofs and floors).
  • Frames, sheetrock, tapes, textures, and paints.
  • Performs rough and finished carpentry work.
  • Builds countertops and cabinets; installs doors, windows, and drop ceilings and projects; plans, estimates, make drawings, orders supplies, and builds.
  • Keeps records of materials used.
  • Uses various tools and machinery, including planners, shapers, jointers, lathes, ban saws, and other woodworking machinery.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in good working condition.
  • Complies with all applicable standards, policies, and procedures, including safety procedures and maintaining a clean work area
  • Maintains competency in all position responsibilities.
  • Complies with all safety and work rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Responsible for properly utilizing, operating, and maintaining all department resources.
  • Provides support to other positions as needed.
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate with little or no supervision.
  • Performs other related duties as elated duties may be assigned.

Marginal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • May work as a laborer in support of journeymen in HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler, and other trade positions in the District, including grounds.
  • Performs minor vehicle and equipment repairs.
  • Performs full-scale asbestos abatement, removal, and repair.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • May assist in the supervision of employee helpers.

Qualifications:  An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements below represent knowledge, skill, and/or ability. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

Education and/or Experience:  High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); one-year minimum of journeyman level experience as a skilled tradesman; completion of a recognized apprenticeship training period; and possession of appropriate trade licenses from the State of Oregon.  

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact appropriately with teachers, staff, community members, students, and regulatory and governmental agencies. Focuses on solving conflict; maintains confidentiality; Contributes to building a positive team spirit.

Language Skills:  Ability to communicate verbally and in writing fluently in English. Preference may be given to applicants fluent in English and Spanish. Ability to effectively present verbal information to students, parents, and other school staff in one-on-one and small-group situations. Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write simple correspondence.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of introductory algebra and geometry.

 

Reasoning Ability:  Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use e-mail.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certificates as determined necessary by the District, including valid driver's license and asbestos awareness training.
