Job Details

The Optical Lab technician role is responsible for precisely applying color tints and specialized coatings to eyeglass lenses. The role requires a combination of technical skills. precision, and a strong eye for color.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lens Tinting:
  • Preparation: Cleaning lenses thoroughly (often with alcohol or soap) before dyeing.
  • Dye Application: Submerging lenses into heated dye baths, which contain a mixture of water and specially formulated dyes. The duration, dye concentration, and temperature are carefully controlled to achieve the desired color and density.
  • Color Matching: Accurately matching the tint color and darkness (density) to specific customer orders, tint samples, or demonstration lenses. This requires an understanding of color theory, as mixing dyes (like blue over yellow to make green) is often involved.
  • Post-Dyeing: Rinsing and cleaning lenses after they are removed from the dye bath.
  • Quality Control & Inspection:
  • Pre- and Post-Tint Inspection: Examining lenses for flaws, scratches, or cosmetic defects both before and after the tinting process.
  • Conformance Check: Rejecting lenses where the tinting is bad or does not conform to the specifications and quality standards (e.g., ANSI standards).
  • Machine Operation and Maintenance:
  • Operating and monitoring tinting equipment, which may include tint tanks, specialized coating equipment (like Anti-Reflective or hard coats), and precision instruments like lensometers.
  • Preparing and mixing new dye batches and solutions.
  • Performing routine cleaning and maintenance of the tinting station and equipment.
  • Documentation and Flow:
  • Reading and interpreting work orders or prescriptions to determine the exact tinting specifications (color, gradient, density).
  • Maintaining cleanliness and organization of the work area.
  • Collaborating with other departments (like surfacing or coating) to ensure timely order fulfillment.

General Requirements and Essential Skills

To excel as a Lens Tinter, candidates typically need the following:

Education and Experience

· Education: A High School Diploma or GED is typically required.

· Experience: 0–2 years of related experience

Technical and Precision Skills

  • Exceptional Attention to Detail: The most critical skill, necessary for precise color matching and identifying minute flaws.

Manual Dexterity: Required for handling delicate lenses, using small tools, and performing repetit

Pay: From $18.50 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
