We have an opportunity for a Model Based Systems Engineer to be a part of the successful development of an integrated rapid ground system critical to national security. You will be a key member of a team that works closely with the Director of Engineering to develop solutions for an Enterprise Ground System.
The ideal candidate will thrive in an environment where they can solve challenging engineering problems, a desire to work directly with customers, and the ability to inform and guide product development with a systems mindset.
The approach to systems engineering for the Space Force National Defense mission embraces model-based systems engineering (MBSE), where a single digital model serves as the Authoritative Source of Truth (ASOT) for all vendors across the entire development lifecycle. Engineering documentation such as requirements, interface control documents, verification plans, architecture diagrams, and service implementation details are generated from this centralized model repository. The model integrates with spacecraft vendor models, to ensure end-to-end interoperability and effective communication across all stakeholders.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Provide Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) products, views, reports, and documents supporting the SOW and software development activities. Including:
- System / Subsystem requirements
- Use cases
- Derived software requirements with traceability to System / Subsystem requirements
- Architecture and design structure and behavior
- Internal and External interfaces
- Test cases with traceability to requirements for verification
- Conduct or support technical reviews with prime integrator and customer such as:
- Technical Interchange Meetings
- Critical Design Review
- Test Readiness Review
- Backlog identification and grooming
- Define objectives, features and dependencies
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, or computer science or an equivalent technical/scientific discipline and 8+ years of experience
- 5+ years of experience specifically in a systems engineer role on a U.S. government program
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for coordinating between program managers, software developers, and other systems engineers
- U.S. Citizenship
Desired Skills & Experience
- Product Design experience such as high-level and detailed software architecture definition, requirements analysis, definition and decomposition, use case analysis and definition, UI/UX design, and/or algorithm development
- Experience with Model Based Systems Engineering
- Experience with Cameo
- Experience with automated test frameworks and CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with Agile software development methodology
- Experience with tools such as Gitlab, Jenkins
- Experience with AWS C2S and/or GovCloud
- Active DoD SECRET security clearance or higher

The SMX salary determination process takes into account a number of factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories, relevant prior work experience, specific skills, education and certifications. The proposed salary for this position is: $123,800—$206,300 USDAt SMX, we are a team of technical and domain experts dedicated to enabling your mission.
