Overview:

During SY2024-25, Truth serves a diverse population of 6th-11th grade students in Washington, DC, and will grow to become a 6th-12th grade school over the next two years.

Position:

The Sojourner Truth School is an established and successful middle school seeking a motivated and innovative Receptionist to help us continue to grow as we expand into high school. The Receptionist will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer and will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service as the first point of contact to all callers and visitors to the school, maintain a peaceful, prepared environment in the lobby, and provide task support as needed to all members of the Operations Team.

The Receptionist, like all other staff, should be fully invested in Truth's two Design Principles:

  • Students need to be prepared for life, not just for school.
  • Each student's identity, voice, perspectives, and choices matter.

Responsibilities:

  • With a positive disposition, greet all callers and visitors to the school, and route phone calls to staff members.
  • Receive, organize, and proactively seek out information regarding upcoming events and general school issues to be able to provide accurate information to any student, staff, or family member who needs their questions answered.
  • Process all guests and tardy/early departing students.
  • Ensure that the front desk and lobby remain tidy and welcoming, and that any needed supplies are always available for students, staff, or visitors.
  • Prepare outgoing mailings and materials.

  • Supporting all aspects of school that are not explicitly instructional, such as (but not limited to): Lunch program support, building maintenance, data management, communications, and logistical support as needs arise.

  • Provide task support to all members of the Operations Team.

  • Customer service experience serving people of various backgrounds;

  • Familiarity with a data system (or a student information system like eSchoolPlus) and Google Workspace; experience with a spreadsheet;
  • Organized and able to multitask in a high-energy environment;
  • An entrepreneurial and grit-oriented mindset that reflects a hunger for all modes of feedback, and an eagerness to grow quickly and excel in a fast-paced environment;
  • Motivated by the mission to set a national model for a high-quality, urban public Montessori secondary school;
  • Warm and personable communicator;
  • Clear judgment, a mature interpersonal style and the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Demonstrated commitment to the potential of urban youth to succeed in rigorous educational settings;
  • Tentatively on-site from 7:30am until 4:00pm with additional hours required based upon special events at the school (parent-teacher conferences, family events, etc.), with a 30-minute lunch break.

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods, often 6-8 hours per day, with the ability to move occasionally throughout the day.

Standing/Walking: 10-15%

  • Occasionally required to stand and walk short distances, such as to greet visitors or move around the office.

  • Frequent reaching above shoulder height and occasional bending to retrieve items or organize documents.

  • Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 10-20 pounds, such as office supplies, packages, or files.
