Job SummaryThe Director of Occupational Safety is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety programs that ensure a safe and compliant work environment across the Express Amazon network. This role is within the operations team, running 24/7/365, where being on-site is required. The Director of Occupational Safety leads strategic initiatives to reduce risk, prevent injuries, and promote a culture of safety excellence. This includes driving a proactive safety culture with creative solutions, working through effective injury follow-up, workplace accommodations, ergonomic assessments, and risk mitigation planning.
Responsibilities- Develop and lead division occupational safety strategy, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, federal, state, and local safety regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments and safety audits; implement corrective actions.
- Integrate safety into all business processes.
- Manage vendor relationships and contracts
- Lead and mentor a team of safety professionals.
- Point of contact for work injuries.
- Ensure timely incident reporting, investigation, and documentation alignment with regulatory and company requirements.
- Collaborate with HR, Operations, Worker's Compensation and third-party administrators to facilitate return-to-work options.
- Manage injured employees' progress and coordinate medical updates.
- Oversee and evaluate safety layout of warehouse floor, ramp, and office environments to reduce hazards.
- Identify and implement ergonomic solutions to minimize risk of strain and repetitive motion injuries.
- Proactively identify behavioral or environmental risk factors.
- Partner with leadership to address non-compliance or coaching opportunities.
- Develop and maintain risk mitigation plans in response to injury trends, operational risks, and audit findings.
- Facilitate safety training, toolbox talks, and proactive engagement campaigns to promote a culture of safety.
- Identify patterns, recommend corrective actions, and track effectiveness of interventions.
- Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Safety, Compliance, Operations) to ensure alignment with corporate standards and regulatory expectations.
- Evaluate accommodation requests in accordance with company policies, ADA, and operational feasibility.Partner with HR and leadership to determine and implement reasonable accommodations.
- Ensure restrictions align with medical guidance.
- BA in Safety Management, Industrial Engineering, Occupational Health, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 7 years of experience in operations in logistics, warehousing, or aviation.
- 5 years of Ramp safety experience
- 7 years of experience in disability management, worker's compensation, or related field
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations, ADA, and best practices in injury management and ergonomics
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence behavior and foster a safety-first mindset at all levels of the division
- Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive information and employee situations with discretion and professionalism
- Strategic thinker with a proactive, hands-on approach
- Data-driven mindset with experience using safety management systems (SMS)
- Crisis management and emergency response planning expertise
- In‐depth knowledge industry safety standards
- Ability to travel regularly across the assigned region and work flexible hours as needed
