The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is seeking a skilled Water Quality Lab Technician I to join our professional team responsible for maintaining the health and safety of our 800,000-gallon aquatic life support systems.  As a member of our water quality team, you'll conduct critical analytical work that directly supports marine animal health, regulatory compliance, and environmental monitoring. Our laboratory operates as a working public exhibit, providing a unique dimension to this technical position. 

Key ResponsibilitiesAnalytical Services & Quality Assurance:
  • Perform comprehensive water quality analyses to ensure optimal conditions for aquarium inhabitants
  • Execute regulatory analyses for marine mammal health monitoring, producing data for submittal to federal and state agencies
  • Conduct environmental water quality testing that generates Level I, II, and III data for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality
  • Maintain rigorous QA/QC standards including equipment calibration, proficiency testing, demonstrations of capability, and meticulous documentation
  • Follow approved analytical methods and standard operating procedures with precision and consistency
Environmental Monitoring & Compliance:
  • Assist in collection of environmental samples while ensuring compliance with established protocols
  • Support training of Citizen Scientists in proper sampling techniques
  • Contribute to annual reviews of standard operating procedures, Quality Assurance Project Plans, and safety documentation
Team Leadership & Development:
  • Train and supervise part-time laboratory staff, volunteers, and interns
  • Share technical expertise with team members to maintain laboratory excellence
Public Engagement:
  • Interact professionally with aquarium visitors, explaining laboratory operations and the importance of water quality monitoring in marine animal care



The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in analytical chemistry and laboratory procedures, experience with quality assurance/ quality control protocols, attention to detail and commitment to accurate data collection and record-keeping, an ability to follow complex analytical methods and standard operating procedures; and will be self-motivated with excellent organizational skills, comfortable working both independently and collaboratively, have strong written and verbal communication abilities, adaptable to the needs of a 7-day operation, and present a professional demeanor when interacting with the public.
