GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK

Under the supervision of the Director of Transportation Services, the Bus Assistant supports the Bus Driver in transporting all district students safely to and from school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assist driver in the transportation of students to and from school
  • Assist the driver in the proper loading and unloading of passengers
  • Maintain student discipline, to include assuring students remain in their seats and wear their masks and other protective equipment
  • Sit in a location which allows observation and assistance to all students at all times
  • Report any concerns regarding students to the driver and to the appropriate building staff
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality
  • Assist the driver in any other duties as requested
  • Assist with cleaning and sanitizing bus surfaces
  • Assist substitute bus drivers in navigating bus routes

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to open vehicle doors, walk, climb steps, bend, stoop, squat, and lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to get along well with others and maintain good working relationships

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED required. Experience working with or transporting children in a day care or school setting preferred.
