Background

EMS Corps is a 5-month EMT training program designed to support youth aged 18-26 who have historically faced barriers to employment. This includes those impacted by under-resourced public systems, insecure housing, systemic racism, and justice system involvement. The program provides EMT training alongside a monthly stipend, wrap-around support, mentorship, career guidance, and job placement services for graduates.

Job Overview

As an EMT Instructor, you will work closely with the director of EMS education and other members of your EMS Corps instructional team to deliver all or part of our 380-hour EMS curriculum. EMS Corps operates under a flipped classroom model, which allows us to provide classic EMT curriculum alongside simulation and hands-on training, additional prep materials, video enrichment and practice exams. This design fosters a collaborative, interactive, and student-centered learning environment, ensuring participants receive tailored support to excel as an EMTs and confidently transition into the workforce. EMT instructors play a critical role in delivering this curriculum as class time involves facilitating discussions, problem solving, and providing direct feedback to students.

Qualifications

● Minimum Qualifications:

○ Desire to work with justice-involved, under-served, under-represented, low-income students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

○ Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for travel to and from training sites if needed.

○ Successful completion of a background check, including verification of certifications and references.

○ Paramedic certification with 2+ years of recent experience in emergency medicine

(one of the following is required):

○ Bachelor's degree and 2+ years of EMT or related field experience, OR

○ Associate's degree and 6+ years of EMT or a related field experience, OR

○ Valid California Community College Instructor Credential in Emergency Medical Technologies.

● Preferred Qualifications:

-Are a

-Current NAEMT instructor certifications (e.g., PHTLS, AMLS, TECC, GEMS, and/or EVOS) and AHA BLS Instructor Certification.

  • Previous teaching/training experience especially in underrepresented and underserved communities.

  • Local community ties and knowledge.

  • Familiarity with digital learning tools and virtual simulations.

Responsibilities

● Curriculum Delivery:

○ Facilitate interactive, hands-on learning experiences aligned with the EMS Corps curriculum.

○ Provide instruction during simulations, scenario-based exercises, and lead discussions.

○ Deliver the EMS Corps' specific EMT training program ensuring students grasp essential concepts and skills.

○ Prepare students for NREMT and fire CPAT

● Classroom Facilitation:

○ Lead discussions that encourage problem-solving and critical thinking.

○ Provide personalized guidance and mentorship to students to address their individual learning needs.

○ Offer direct and constructive feedback on student performance during skills practice and assessments.

● Flipped Classroom Support:

○ Utilize the flipped classroom model to maximize student engagement and comprehension.

○ Ensure students are prepared for in-class activities and stay on track by monitoring their use of prep materials, video content, and practice exams.

○ Integrate technology and enrichment tools to enhance learning outcomes.

● Student Support:

○ Recognize and address the challenges faced by EMS Corps students, including those related to systemic barriers.

○ Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment that promotes student success.

○ Monitor student progress and collaborate with the instructional team to address areas of improvement.

● Compliance and Professional Standards:

○ Adhere to all EMT certification requirements and training standards as defined by the State of California.

○ Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, and evaluations.

○ Stay current with developments in EMT education and regulations.

● Collaboration and Professional Development:

○ Work closely with the director of EMS education and other team members to adapt and improve instructional methods.

○ Participate in ongoing training sessions on the EMS Corps program model.

○ Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the instructional team.

o Training on trauma-informed teaching methods to address the unique challenges faced by at-risk students and ensure they are prepared for a career in emergency medicine.

o Guidance on providing mentorship and tailored support for youth impacted by systemic barriers, including under-resourced public systems and justice system involvement.

o Resources to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes equity and student success.

● Technology Integration:

o Instruction on integrating digital tools and virtual simulations to enhance classroom interactivity and learning outcomes.
