Job Overview
The Family Literacy Supervisor supervises the daily operations of the IRC in Atlanta's Early Childhood and expanded Family Education programming within the Adult Education Department. The Adult Education program provides integrated English language classes, new arrival orientations, and job readiness trainings and supports families participating in these services with onsite child-watch / childcare and develops curriculum to present to both children and their parents. The program aims to prepare newly arrived refugee and immigrant families who have young children with the knowledge they will need to be successful upon entering the public school system. The Supervisor will manage part-time and full-time staff, interns, and program volunteers as they provide supportive activities for family literacy efforts including adult education, early-childhood education, and developing parenting best-practices.
The Supervisor is responsible for developing effective curricula in close collaboration with funders and partners, and elevate educational practices across adult and child program areas to meet funder expectations, including the managing of funder reports and the management of program budget and supplies. The program expects that both adult and child participants will have basic through intermediate English language proficiency, including pre-literate adult learners. This position will be full-time, non-exempt, 37.5-hours per week, and reports directly to the Adult Education Manager.
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure daily operations of the IRC's Clarkston area adult education, early childhood education and child-watch programs are effective and efficiently implemented through a team of professional adult and child education staff.
- Supervise the team in accordance with the IRC's People Management Standards.
- Manage delivery of the Family Literacy project including schedule, delivery, and reporting in coordination with state and federal partners. Coordinate with providers, eligible families, and interpretation teams to ensure enrollment and orientation for the project.
- Develop and organize standardized activities and curriculum for adult education, the early childhood and child-watch space, identify improvements, and implement refinements to support the delivery of effective, research-based practices.
- Coordinate and manage relationships with local and state partners for capacity building, recruitment, funding, and program support.
- Supervise staff in conducting family outreach, recruitment, and support retention efforts for the program.
- Work closely with administrative and instructional staff to ensure compliance with all program standards and grant requirements through ensuring accurate tracking of student registration, assessments, daily attendance, and other data metrics.
- Provide service oversight to ensure alignment with programmatic goals and outcomes.
- Prepare Family Literacy program reports (quantitative and narrative) and contribute to program fundraising efforts to expand the reach and effectiveness of services.
- Provide training and day-to-day management of program volunteers and interns. Develop practices to ensure effective implementation of volunteer and interns within the project.
- Maintain ongoing communication with IRC management on the status of adult education programs and provide timely reports on client progress, program successes and needs, and staffing.
Job Requirements
Education:
- University degree (4-year) required; graduate degree (M.A., M.S., M.Ed. or higher) in education, TESOL/ESOL, or social work strongly preferred
- Completion of a certificate in early childhood education or in child development or a related certificate is strongly preferred.
Work Experience
- Minimum two (2) years of teaching experience working in an education setting with multicultural populations and/or refugees
- Minimum of one (1) year of related curriculum development
- Minimum of one (1) year supervising and managing staff in an educational setting strongly preferred
- Strong desire to support vulnerable individuals and families and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting.
- Enthusiasm for early childhood education and language learning, with children and their families.
- An understanding of the principles of early childhood development and an ability to adapt to meet the needs of immigrant and refugee families.
- An interest in immigrant and refugee and asylee issues and the resettlement process.
- Strong communication abilities, including the ability to lead groups of students and oversee community volunteers.
- Comfortable working in a cross-cultural environment and with adult and child language learners, sometimes with little or no English proficiency.
- Ability to take initiative, work independently on projects, and follow through on critical tasks.
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment, sometimes co-teaching and sometimes facilitating learning through interpretation.
- Strong time-management skills and comfortability with computer and web-based communication platforms.
- Fluent in spoken and written English. Bi-lingual abilities in a language spoken by an IRC client group is desired.

- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
Working Environment
- An office workspace and off-site education spaces with integrated adult classrooms and childcare spaces.
- Some local and domestic travel as needed for meetings and conferences.
Compensation: (
Pay Range: $53,270 - $61,560
)
