Job Title: Commercial HVAC Install Apprentice

Position Summary

The Commercial HVAC Install Apprentice will work under the supervision of HVAC installers, journeymen, and foremen to learn the skills required to install all areas of commercial HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, air distribution, packaged units, rooftop units (RTUs), VAV systems, chillers, ductwork, and related mechanical equipment. This role is installation-focused and involves hands-on fieldwork on commercial construction sites, with progressive responsibility as skills develop.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with installation of commercial HVAC systems, including RTUs, heat pumps, split systems, VAV boxes, fan coil units, exhaust systems, and air handlers.

• Help install, assemble, and seal commercial ductwork, fittings, supports, dampers, and air distribution components according to mechanical plans.

• Support lifting, placing, and securing large HVAC equipment using rigging, lifts, and cranes (under supervision).

• Assist in installing refrigeration piping, condensate piping, and mechanical supports for commercial systems.

• Learn to read and interpret mechanical blueprints, shop drawings, riser diagrams, and installation specifications.

• Use and maintain tools including drills, shears, snips, vacuum pumps, gauges, hand tools, power tools, and sheet metal equipment.

• Assist with startup preparation, including checking airflow components, filters, belts, economizers, thermostats, and electrical connections.

• Measure, cut, and layout duct sections, insulation, sheet metal, and mechanical materials according to commercial specifications.

• Support Mechanics in troubleshooting installation-related issues such as airflow restrictions, equipment alignment, and control wiring paths.

• Maintain a safe and clean jobsite while following OSHA, company, and site-specific safety requirements.

• Load, unload, organize, and stage equipment and materials for installation.

• Attend required apprentice classes or technical training (if enrolled).

• Perform other duties as assigned to support commercial HVAC installation.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

• Enrollment in or willingness to enroll in a commercial HVAC apprenticeship or technical program.

• Basic math, measurement, mechanical, and electrical aptitude.

• Ability to work on rooftops, in mechanical rooms, above ceilings, and on active construction sites.

• Willingness to learn, follow directions, and work as part of a commercial installation team.

• Reliable, strong work ethic, and high attention to detail.

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding work.
• Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Skills (Not Required)

• Previous HVAC, construction, sheet metal, or mechanical experience.

• Familiarity with ladders, lifts, rigging equipment, and common HVAC installation/ construction tools.

Work Environment

• Commercial construction sites, rooftops, mechanical rooms, and industrial buildings.

• Exposure to heights, noise, dust, heavy equipment, and changing temperatures.

• PPE required (provided where applicable).
