Reporting to the Office of the President, The Athletic Director: (1) provides visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the athletics program; (2) maintains an athletics program that is committed to the university's mission and strategic priorities; (3) works with Institutional Advancement to raise funds for the athletic department; (4) administers the overall athletic budget; (5) recruits and manages the coaching staff; and (5) ensure compliance with all university, national association and conference policies, rules, and regulations. The director also collaborates with student administrative offices and Admissions on the recruitment and retention of student-athletes and with University Affairs and the media on publicity and reporting of athletic events and results. Frequent nights and weekend work and in-season travel required.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Selects and retains qualified subordinate personnel to ensure the provision of quality-efficient
    external/internal customer satisfaction through ongoing support, training, supervision, coaching,
    counseling, and performance review.
  • Administers and directly oversees the financial operations of the athletic department. Formulates budget guidelines, approves budget appropriations for each area of sports and monitors compliance with the budget as approved by the University Board.
  • Coordinating with Institutional Advancement, responsible for the development of a comprehensive fundraising plan incorporating both operational and capital fundraising initiatives. Develops and implements strategies for promoting annual giving, gifts, and special gifts in coordination; maintain a prospect list of all potential donors; identifies and cultivates donors of major gifts; organizes, coordinates and oversees fundraising activities in support of individual sports and departmental objectives (e.g., banquets and other social days).
  • Assists the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) in investigating all cases where a violation has or may have occurred. Consults with the FAR for interpretation of applicable rules and clarifies conflicts of opinion with the President of the University.
  • Serves as the primary spokesperson for the Department, promoting the philosophy of the intercollegiate athletics program with faculty, staff, students, alumni, sports media, and the general public during public relations opportunities.
  • Provides supervision and control over the marketing and promotions functions.
  • Approves requests for athletic scholarship awards.
  • Coordinates activities/communication within the CIAA conference and NCAA.
  • Helps coaches in the arranging of athletic schedules, then approves athletic schedules and presents them to the Events Committee for publicity and institutional coordination.
  • Oversees the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the Athletic Department's
    goals and objectives.
  • Work with the University's Title IX officer and Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance to ensure compliance with Title IX guidelines
  • Assist or advises coaches with problems specifically related to the implementation of their sport.
  • Creates and maintains good public relations with prospective Student-Athletes, parents, spectators, news
    media, sales representatives, financial donors, persons from opposing schools, local churches and the
  • Establishes various policies for operational procedures in conjunction with the leadership team.
  • Supervising grant-in-aid distribution for all sports and supervising process of initial and annual
    renewal/non-renewal of athletic grants-in-aid.
  • Attends national, regional and conference meetings, as the spokesperson for the athletic program.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly supervises employees, including the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA, and All Active Coaching Staff; carries out supervisory responsibilities by following the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Minimum Job Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning required; Master's preferred.
  • Ten years demonstrated extensive and successful experience in Athletics, higher education
    administration and management.
  • Five years of successful supervisory/management experience, preferably in higher education
  • Demonstrated experience is the accreditation standards in higher education.
  • Demonstrated fundraising & development for both operational & capital needs.
  • Budget management.
  • Visionary and forward-thinking problem-solver.
  • High business and personal ethical standards.
  • Demonstrated calm; thoughtful under pressure.
  • Legally operate an automobile in the State of North Carolina.

Must have a valid driver's license with the ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check. Must be able to read, write, and speak fluently in English.

Physical Demands
Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours/day. Some lifting (up to 25 pounds occasionally), bending, and carrying.
Specific vision abilities include the ability to use close vision. The employee is regularly required to talk and
hear, and to use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
