Catholic Chaplain

This position is being recruited in anticipation of our organization's proposal submission for the Santa Rita Jail Chaplaincy Program.

Hiring is contingent upon award of the contract by Alameda County.

Job Title: Catholic Chaplain

Pay: $27 – $34 per hour

Schedule: Full-Time, 32 hours per week

Location: Santa Rita Jail, Dublin CA

Position Summary

The Catholic Chaplain provides sacramental ministry, catechesis, pastoral counseling, and spiritual leadership for Catholic justice-involved individuals. This role ensures that Catholic residents have access to the sacraments, worship, and faith formation consistent with the Roman Catholic tradition.

Key Responsibilities

Sacramental and Liturgical Ministry

• Celebrate Mass and Eucharist (if ordained).
• Provide confession/reconciliation, anointing of the sick, and other sacraments where authorized.
• Lead rosary, devotional practices, liturgical observances, and catechetical instruction.
• Support Holy Days of Obligation and seasonal observances such as Lent, Advent, and feast days.

Pastoral Care

• Provide pastoral counseling, grief support, and crisis intervention.
• Conduct one-on-one pastoral visits across all areas of the facility.
• Assist individuals exploring Catholic conversion or catechumenate preparation.
• Respond to written religious service requests within required timelines.

Faith Formation

• Lead Catholic education classes, scripture study, and spiritual development sessions.
• Provide instruction and preparation for sacraments where appropriate.

Religious Materials and Accommodations

• Distribute rosaries, missals, devotionals, Bibles, and other approved items.
• Maintain an inventory of Catholic religious articles and literature.
• Participate in religious diet review processes for Catholic residents.

Program and Event Planning

• Coordinate special Catholic events such as reconciliation services, feast-day celebrations, and guest clergy visits.
• Assist in scheduling and managing space for Catholic worship and study groups.

Volunteer Engagement

• Recruit, support, and supervise Catholic volunteers.
• Ensure volunteers are properly trained and follow facility and program rules.

Collaboration

• Work collaboratively within a multi-faith chaplaincy team.
• Coordinate with Protestant, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Sikh, and other chaplains to support shared program goals.
• Attend program meetings and mandatory training.

On-Call Emergency Support

• Participate in the 24/7 chaplaincy on-call rotation.
• Respond to urgent pastoral needs and report on-site within two hours when assigned.

Documentation and Reporting

• Maintain logs of sacramental services, pastoral visits, class participation, and distributed materials.
• Submit Daily Service Reports and Monthly Service Reports as required.

Qualifications

• One of the following:

– Ordained Catholic priest or deacon in good standing

– Accredited Catholic chaplain

– Approved by the Diocese of Oakland or Archdiocese of San Francisco

• Strong pastoral care, communication, and teaching abilities.
• Ability to work effectively inside a correctional environment.
• Must pass the Alameda County Sheriff's Office background check and complete required training.
