POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for the day to day operations of the Sterile Processing Department.

POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma/GED certificate is required
  • Certification in Sterile Processing required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of three (3) years experience Operating Room Tech in an acute care hospital setting with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of AORN guidelines and recommendations and AAMI standards of surgical instrumentation sterilization process.
  • Able to respond to staff needs by interpreting facial expressions and/or verbal communications.
  • Requires good communication and organizational skills.
  • Requires reasoning ability and good independent judgment.
    Working knowledge of computers and software applications necessary for the job.

Responsibilities:

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ordering of instruments, supplies and equipment necessary for all surgical procedures.
  • Ordering of supplies and equipment necessary to process instruments for sterilization.
  • Sends out operating instruments and equipment for repair and replacement.
  • Supervision of Central Sterile technicians to ensure implementation of DHR policies and procedures on sterilization process.
  • Plans for a smooth flow of daily surgical caseload by coordinating and communicating with the OR supervisor.
  • Acts as a resource person for all surgical staff.
  • Orientates new employees to the department.
  • Troubleshoots and notifies BioMed for problems in the department.
  • Coordinates with Sales reps for loaner instrument trays needed for specialty cases.
    Maintains departmental logs and reports.

CUSTOMER SERVICE:

B. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.

C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids). Person who performs these duties are not called upon as part of their employment to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
