As a Product Marketing Director at Descript, you will play a pivotal role in bringing our AI-native video editing platform to new customers. You'll define the narratives, positioning, and ICP strategies that help new customers discover Descript, while driving full-funnel GTM programs that accelerate both self-serve and sales-assisted growth. Together, these efforts will allow Descript to reach the next phase of our company growth in a fast-changing, and exciting category.
Your team will understand the industry, our prospects, and customers deeply. You will ensure the Product Marketing function is a center of strategic excellence - able to represent the voices of prospects and customers, their motivations, use cases, and existing workflows. Through this expertise, your team will also lead work that helps existing customers deepen their usage, adopt new features, and increase their usage.
Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, you'll ensure Descript shows up in the market with distinctive stories, memorable demos, and customer-facing materials that elevate our value and accelerate deal cycles.
What You'll DoPositioning & Messaging
- Define how Descript's AI-powered creation and editing products stand out in a crowded market. Craft narratives that differentiate our horizontal platform and communicate our vision for eliminating the video-editing learning curve.
Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) Definition
- Work with Product, Marketing, Sales, and Data to refine and operationalize Descript's ICPs across creators, teams, and enterprise segments. Translate ICP insights into targeting, messaging, and channel strategy.
Pricing & Packaging
- Partner with Product, Finance, and Growth to evolve Descript's pricing and packaging. Evaluate willingness to pay, feature-to-plan fit, and adoption patterns. Propose changes that balance customer value, product simplicity, and revenue performance.
Technical Fluency
- Develop a clear understanding of Descript's AI systems, media-editing models, and agentic workflows. Translate complex technology into accessible explanations for a range of audiences.
Go-to-Market (GTM)
- Own GTM strategy for major launches. Drive product adoption through crisp positioning, compelling demos, and tight coordination across Product, Sales, Growth, and Marketing.
Sales Enablement
- Create materials that help Sales and Customer Success articulate Descript's differentiated value. Provide competitive insights, pitch frameworks, and product-led stories that accelerate deal cycles.
Cross-functional Leadership
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, Design, Marketing, and Sales to bring market insight into roadmap decisions. Ensure alignment from strategy through execution.
AI Evangelism
- Represent Descript at events, webinars, with customers, partners, and analysts. Tell the story of where AI-assisted media creation is heading and how Descript is shaping that future.
Deep Expertise
- You have 15+ years as a proven product marketing leader, with experience working in SaaS business and marketing technical products. Ideally you have some experience in a startup environment.
Team Development
- You have 7+ years of people-management, that have informed thoughtful approaches to helping team members learn, explore, and do their best work.
Influential Leadership
- You bring strong opinions, spark productive debates, and help your team and partners operate with clarity and conviction.
- You make product marketing visible and trusted across the organization.
Ownership & Craft
- You have a broad curiosity and interest in the technical and user-facing aspects of a product.
- You have a commitment to craft, an eagle-eye for detail, and a supernatural ability to see around corners.
Exceptional Communication
- In cross-functional relationships, strategy documentation, campaign analysis, and guidance for improvement, your written and verbal communication is clear and galvanizing.
Data Fluency
- You make Hex and Amplitude dashboards in your sleep.
- And you know how to ask the right questions of Data Science and Research collaborators.
Bonus strengths
- You have some fluency with creative tools.
- You keep up with the internet zeitgeist, and knowing how to ride the waves.
The base salary range for this role is $220,000-250,000. Final offer amounts will carefully consider multiple factors, including prior experience, expertise, and location, and they may vary from the amount above.
About DescriptDescript is building a simple, intuitive, fully-powered editing tool for video and audio — an editing tool built for the age of AI. We are a team of 150 and the backing of some of the world's greatest investors (OpenAI, Andreessen Horowitz, Redpoint Ventures, Spark Capital).
Descript is the special company that's in possession of both product market fit and the raw materials (passionate user community, great product, large market) for growth, but is still early enough that each new employee has a measurable influence on the direction of the company.
Benefits include a generous healthcare package, 401k matching program, catered lunches, and flexible vacation time. Our headquarters are located in the Mission District of San Francisco, CA. We're hiring for a mix of remote roles and hybrid roles. For those who are remote, we have a handful of opportunities throughout the year for in person collaboration. For our hybrid roles, we're flexible, and you're an adult—we don't expect or mandate that you're in the office every day. We do believe there are valuable and serendipitous moments of discovery and collaboration that come from working together in person.
Descript is an equal opportunity workplace—we are dedicated to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, marital status, disability, gender identity, or Veteran status. We believe in actively building a team rich in diverse backgrounds, experiences, and opinions to better allow our employees, products, and community to thrive.
