The Lead Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the Nuclear Medicine department while performing diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures. This role provides technical leadership, ensures regulatory compliance, supports staff development, and serves as a liaison between technologists, physicians, and management.

JOB DUTIES

  • On Call is required

 Perform and oversee nuclear medicine imaging and therapeutic procedures in accordance with departmental protocols and physician orders.

 Provide day-to-day leadership to Nuclear Medicine staff, including workflow coordination, staff coverage, and problem resolution.

 Ensure compliance with all regulatory and accreditation standards (NRC, state regulations, Joint Commission, ACR, radiation safety policies).

 Maintain responsibility for radiopharmaceutical ordering, handling, storage, documentation, and inventory control.

 Enforce radiation safety practices for patients, staff, and the public in coordination with the Radiation Safety Officer.

 Assist with staff training, onboarding, competency assessments, and annual evaluations.

 Collaborate with physicians and leadership on protocol development, quality improvement initiatives, and equipment optimization.

 Participate in scheduling, supply management, and budget-conscious decision-making.

 Address patient concerns and ensure high standards of patient care and safety.

SPECIFIC JOB DEMANDS

Fingering: Frequently - Picking, pinching, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling.

Feeling: Frequently - Noting attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

Talking: Frequently - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word to impart oral information to clients or to the public and to convey detailed spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.

Hearing: Frequently - Perceiving the nature of sounds by ear.

Near Acuity: Frequently - Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less.

Accommodation: Occasionally - Adjustment of lens of eye to bring an object into sharp focus. This factor is required when doing near point work at varying distances from the eye.

Color Vision: Frequently - Ability to identify and distinguish colors.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

 Registered Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT or ARRT[N]).

 Current state licensure as required.

 Minimum of 3–5 years of Nuclear Medicine experience; prior leadership experience preferred.

 Strong knowledge of radiation safety, regulatory requirements, and quality assurance processes.

 Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal environment with little exposure to noise, dust or temperature changes. A large part of work time is standing or walking.

Intermittent exposure to unpleasant physical conditions.

May be exposed to potential hazards such as electrical and radiant energy. May also be exposed to chemical wastes, body wastes, fluids and other possible infectious material.

May be scheduled overtime, weekend and/or holiday hours.

Must be able to rotate shifts and weekends as needed.
