The Retirement Specialist II position will manage the administration of the Omaha School Employee' Retirement Systems (OSERS) retirement benefits.

We are looking for someone that has a passion for helping others, the ability to learn many processes, and a desire to lead. This position will help retirement members through the retirement process, calculate estimates, process retirement paperwork, and assign and track work assignments for others.

Work schedule: M-F, 8-5

Hiring rate: $20.474 per hour
Range: $20.474 – $30.181 The pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints if approved.

Examples of Work

  • Interprets and applies state and federal retirement laws, agency rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Explain services, procedures, options, and benefits to plan members and beneficiaries. 
  • Examines benefit applications for compliance with internal procedures and verifies salary and service information of members with authorized agents of the Nebraska Retirement Systems to determine retirement benefit eligibility, per all governing statutes, rules and regulations, and policies.
  • Conducts research to review and analyze retirement plan member records from multiple data systems.  Includes records of payroll, vital statistics, legal contracts, and court documents.
  • Processes applications for retirement and survivor benefits by evaluating and calculating estimates under applicable statutes.  Includes Optional Service Credit (refunded service, out of state service, leave of absence, and purchase of service).  Reviews/audits the work of co-workers.
  • Under limited supervision, handles advanced cases more difficult or complicated issues in assigned functions of the Retirement Specialists above.  Assists Retirement Plan Manager in handling escalated matters.
  • Trains co-workers in any of the above listed duties and assists Retirement Plan Manager in the resolution of work area problems.
  • Gives work assignments to co-workers, in accordance with established workflow requirements, and assist supervisory/management staff in the timely accomplishment of work.
  • Monitors and reports on workloads and performance of a benefits processing area(s) staff to determine overall conformity to established timetables and quality standards and to document and communicate employee production levels and training needs.
  • Meets with other lead workers and Retirement Plan Managers to resolve inter-area issues and discuss procedures affecting all areas.
  • Relieves Retirement Plan Manager of administrative duties when possible and in their absence.  Provides input in the recruitment and hiring of new employees in the supervisory organization of the Retirement Plan Manager.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: One or more years of coursework, training and/or experience in office support/secretarial support functions including typing duties AND one years experience as a Retirement Specialist I or working in a similar capacity calculating benefits and providing customer service to benefit recipients about retirement plan guidelines AND experience leading others.

Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree; experience processing retirement plan refunds, annuities, and/or other retirement distributions; experience composing and conducting business correspondence and communications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: office procedures; basic math; English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and composition for purposes of recognizing and correcting errors in correspondence.

Skill in: Typing ability sufficient to type at a rate of 40 words a minute (net).

Ability to: operate office equipment; communicate effectively; understand and apply instructions; file and retrieve records using an established filing system; proofread and detect errors in a final product; interact with the public and agency staff in a professional manner; work under pressure, organize and assign work assignments; monitor work, communicate effectively.
