Wastewater Treatment Operator I

Performs semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of wastewater reclamation facilities, treatment plant processes, equipment and appurtenances as well as reclaimed water system. Maintains, monitors, installs, and/or repairs the City's wastewater and reclaimed water facilities.
The ideal candidate would have knowledge and experience in operating and maintaining a water reclamation facility. Preferance will be given to those candidates who possess an ADEQ Wastewater Grade I certification as well as a CDL with tanker endorsment. The ideal candidate would also possess experience in operating centrifuges for dewatering sludge, performing / analyzing lab testing and wastewater process controls. The individual would have previous experience with systems such as Hach WIMs, SCADA and Lucity asset management. They would be a self-motivated, detail oriented and possess strong interpersonal skills. Shall be able to maintain a positive attitude and represent the City of Goodyear in a professional way.

Essential Functions- Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve operations by streamlining work processes, decreasing turnaround times, and working cooperatively and jointly to provide efficiency and excellence in the use of City resources. Maintains records and documents daily process data in log books, process data sheets, computer data records, emails and weekly reports.
- Delivers outstanding customer service. Establishes and maintains open communication with all internal and external customers; to include co-workers, contractors, residents, and other City departments. Informs immediate supervisor of daily operations, important developments, and work activities. Conducts safety inspections and plant tours for supervision, city officials, school groups and other visitors.
- Adheres to industry and City safety standards, policies, practices, and procedures. Provides services in accordance with government standards such as Bluestake, OSHA, and MAG.
- Executes routine and emergency operational, maintenance, construction, and repair functions of infrastructure or equipment utilized in the treatment and reclamation of wastewater.
- Operates all equipment used in wastewater reclamation facilities including pumps, motors, chlorinators, and flow regulating devices. Maintains the integrity of landscaping, checks storage tanks and electrical panels, adjusts chemical feed rates, and completes work orders. Performs daily lab procedures andinterprets result and make necessary adjustments and corrections based on labresults.
- Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.
- Experience: : Minimum one year of experience in a related field.
- Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid driver's license, ADEQ Grade I Operator License in Wastewater Treatment and obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 12 months of hire.
- Reading: Work requires the ability to read maps, manuals, and work orders.
- Math: Work requires the ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Writing: Work requires the ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
- Managerial: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others.
- Policy/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results. There is some opportunity for discretion when making selections among a few, easily identifiable choices. Work involving discretion is typically reviewed before finalized.
- Technical Skills: Limited Application Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization. Limited analysis and independent thinking is utilized.
- Human Relations Skills: Moderate - Work requires regular interaction involving exchange and receipt of information. The purpose of interactions is primarily the sharing of information.
First 3 Months of Employment:
- Become familiar with the City's Policies and Procedures, safety standards and the departments (SOP) standard operating procedures.
Demonstrate the ability to effectively perform all daily rounds, equipment inspections, required data collection and accurately maintain operational logbooks.
Demonstrate proficient use of the Lucity work order system and the ability to complete time sheets, leave of absence forms.
- Be able to explain the importance of safety, proper data collection and record keeping.
3 to 6 Months of Employment:
- Demonstrate the ability to perform process laboratory testing and updating the Sr. Tech or Supervisor of the daily lab results at all three Goodyear Water Reclamation Facilities.
Show the ability to maintain a consistency in keeping the Sr. Tech or Supervisor apprised of process or equipment issues and facility conditions.
Demonstrate the basic understanding of the Aquifer Protection Permit (APP) & Arizona Pollution Discharge Elimination System (AZPDES) permit. Permit alert and discharge limits for the all three of the Water Reclamation Facilities.
Obtain a Class B CDL driver's license with Tanker endorsement.
6 to 12 Months of Employment:
- Demonstrate the ability to efficiently process digested solids and preform centrifuge operations.
Demonstrate the ability to identify the (RAS) Return Activated Sludge and (WAS) Waste Activated Sludge pipe routing at all three of the Water Reclamation Facilities.
Demonstrate to a supervisor or their designee the basic hydraulic flow path of the three City of Goodyear Water Reclamation Facilities and the various effluent discharge options.
Obtain an ADEQ Grade I Wastewater Treatment certification.
- Demonstrate the basic understanding of Nitrification and De-nitrification (NDN) used in the activated sludge process.
