We are seeking a dynamic and proactive Environmental Services Director to lead and oversee all aspects of environmental services and building maintenance within our facility. This pivotal role involves managing janitorial operations and building maintenance functions, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, sanitation, safety, and facility integrity, and fostering a healthy environment for staff, patients, visitors, or clients. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership skills, a comprehensive understanding of cleaning and maintenance protocols, and a commitment to maintaining compliance with health, safety, and regulatory requirements. As an energetic leader, you will drive continuous improvement initiatives to uphold the highest standards of environmental services and building maintenance excellence.
Position Summary:
The Environmental Services Director is responsible for the strategic leadership, planning, and day-to-day oversight of all environmental services functions, including housekeeping and building maintenance. This role ensures a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming environment for residents, patients, staff, and visitors while supporting organizational goals, quality standards, and budgetary requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement, and oversee cleaning and sanitation protocols to ensure a safe and hygienic environment across all areas of the facility.
- Manage daily operations of the environmental services team, including scheduling, training, coaching, and performance evaluations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations and other applicable health and safety standards.
- Coordinate with hospital or facility leadership to address specific cleaning needs, floor care requirements, and special sanitation projects.
- Conduct regular inspections to monitor cleanliness levels, identify opportunities for improvement, and ensure adherence to established standards.
- Lead commercial cleaning initiatives, including floor care, waste management, and infection control practices.
- Maintain detailed records of cleaning activities, safety incidents, inspections, and compliance documentation for audits and reporting.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management
- Direct, supervise, and evaluate environmental services staff, including housekeeping and maintenance personnel.
- Recruit, train, schedule, and discipline staff in accordance with organizational policies.
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and implement departmental goals, policies, and procedures.
Housekeeping & Environmental Services
- Oversee all housekeeping operations to ensure facilities are clean, sanitary, and aesthetically maintained.
- Ensure compliance with infection control standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Monitor cleaning schedules, supplies, and equipment to maintain efficiency and quality.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of facilities and address deficiencies promptly.
Building Maintenance & Facilities Support
- Oversee routine, preventive, and corrective building maintenance to ensure facilities, grounds, and systems are safe, functional, and well maintained.
- Coordinate inspections, repairs, and upkeep of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, and building infrastructure.
- Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency situations.
- Assist with minor repairs, room setups, renovations, and special projects as needed.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and equipment usage.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations related to environmental services, OSHA standards, safety, and facilities management.
- Promote workplace safety, including proper use of chemicals, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Participate in emergency preparedness, disaster planning, and safety drills.
Budgeting & Inventory
- Develop and manage departmental budgets.
- Monitor expenses and control costs while maintaining service quality.
- Order, store, and manage inventory of supplies, equipment, and chemicals.
- Evaluate vendors and recommend cost-effective purchasing solutions.
Communication & Collaboration
- Collaborate with administration, clinical teams, and other departments to support organizational operations.
- Respond promptly and professionally to concerns from staff, residents, patients, and visitors.
- Prepare reports related to staffing, performance, inspections, and departmental outcomes.
Requirements
- Proven experience in environmental services or janitorial management within healthcare or commercial settings.
- Strong knowledge of OSHA safety standards related to cleaning and sanitation practices.
- Demonstrated expertise in hospital or healthcare environment cleaning procedures strongly preferred.
- Extensive custodial experience with emphasis on floor care techniques and commercial cleaning methods.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate, train, and develop teams effectively.
- Familiarity with sanitation equipment, cleaning chemicals, and infection control protocols.
- Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred.
- Previous experience in environmental services, housekeeping, facilities, or maintenance management required.
- Supervisory or leadership experience strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of cleaning techniques, maintenance practices, safety standards, and regulatory compliance.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
