Summary
The Senior Financial Market Specialist plays a crucial role in monitoring, analyzing, and communicating global financial market developments and monetary policy trends. The Senior Financial Market Specialist conducts extensive market outreach, including organizing and participating, with some guidance, in meetings with key market participants, as well as developing and growing industry relationships. With some guidance, the Senior Financial Market Specialist is responsible for producing in-depth analyses of major foreign central banks and their policies, as well as synthesizing moderately complex market information from diverse sources to provide insightful, big-picture perspectives. The Senior Financial Market Specialist, with some guidance, authors critical sections of important documents like the Tealbook, contributes significantly to policy-oriented work, and prepares briefing materials for high-level meetings. This role requires the ability to anticipate important issues, conduct independent analysis, and effectively communicate financial concepts to senior leadership, including Federal Reserve Board members.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Anticipates issues requiring analysis, conducts proactive market outreach, and with some guidance organizes and participates in meetings with market participants and nurtures ongoing relationships with these contacts, and with some guidance produces comprehensive, well-structured summaries of key insights and takeaways.
- Monitors global financial market developments and provides ongoing analysis, with a focus on foreign exchange, bond, and equity markets, as well as monetary policy expectations.
- Monitors the analysis of major foreign central banks, develops deep understanding of their operational frameworks and policies, and with some guidance, authors comprehensive write-ups on their meetings and decisions for distribution to the Federal Reserve Board, providing critical insights on global monetary policy developments.
- Continuously monitors global financial market developments, synthesizing complex information from diverse sources to provide insightful, big-picture analysis that goes beyond surface-level reporting.
- Continuously monitors market commentary/analysis from multiple sources. Synthesizes this data and critically evaluates this information, combining insights from various reports to provide original, value-added analysis and distributes these insights to division leadership and Federal Reserve Board members.
- With some guidance, contributes significantly to the division's policy-oriented work, consisting of policy memos for senior policymakers, briefing materials for Board and FOMC meetings, and presentations for senior staffers and the Federal Reserve Board.
- With some guidance, authors the international financial market section of the Tealbook, crafting a concise yet comprehensive summary of intermeeting market movements. Develops a coherent overarching narrative that is precise, accurate, and captures key global financial developments.
Position Requirements
About the Team
The Global Financial Markets (GFM) section covers all aspects of foreign financial markets, with a close focus on foreign exchange, bond, and equity markets. This coverage includes analysis of current developments; development of analytical tools to understand market movements and their macroeconomic implications; and performing long-term research on asset prices, corporate finance, and other aspects of global financial markets. GFM also closely monitors monetary policy actions by foreign central banks and evaluates their effects on global financial markets. The section processes and produces a broad set of data for section and division use and provides the H.10, G.5, and G.5A foreign exchange releases to the general public.
Position Requirements
GFM is part of the Division of International Finance (IF), which helps the Federal Reserve Board achieve its policy objectives by providing analysis and research on foreign economic activity, U.S. external trade and capital flows, and developments in international financial markets and institutions.
Essential Duties:
- Monitor global financial market developments and provide ongoing analysis, with a focus on foreign exchange, bond, and equity markets, as well as monetary policy expectations.
- Gather market intelligence via meetings with market participants and following market commentary/analysis and disseminate the information to IF leadership and Federal Reserve Board members.
- Contribute significantly or take the lead in the Division's policy-oriented work, consisting of policy memos for senior policymakers, briefing materials for Board and FOMC meetings, and presentations for senior staffers and the Federal Reserve Board.
- Serve as author for the international financial market section in the Tealbook.
- Deliver presentations to senior leadership including the Federal Reserve Board.
- Identify market themes relevant for the objectives of the Federal Reserve and other major foreign central banks and display substantial knowledge of global financial markets
- Analyze data on asset prices, valuations, and macroeconomic data.

An undergraduate degree in finance, economics, international affairs, business administration, or a related field is required, but a graduate degree is strongly preferred. A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience (Federal Reserve System or other policy institutions, financial industry), excluding years spent in post-graduate studies, is required.
