The person in this position will be responsible for all day-to-day operations and clinical activity for the Department of Internal Medicine's Cardiology and Gastroenterology ambulatory clinics. This position will direct and support clinic staff in these divisions and in all patient care activities and act as the lead nurse in representing the Department.
Examples of DutiesAdministrative: 80%
1. Identifies and recommends resource needs for the assigned divisions within the Department, including staffing levels, space and equipment and employee training programs providing justification for same to the Healthcare Administrator III and Chiefs.
2. Directs and evaluates effectiveness and ongoing competency under his/her reporting line including the overall structure and function of people and resources.
3. In conjunction with the Chief(s), identifies goals and vision for the Division(s), and develops plans to achieve.
4. Develops Division policies and procedures to ensure that goals and vision are reached, maintain consistency and compliance with SOM guidelines and, where necessary, hospital affiliation(s) guidelines.
5. Works with the Chief(s) and clinic management team (i.e. Healthcare Administrators and Vice Chair for Clinical Operations) to develop work unit goals that are consistent with the goals and vision for Divisions and the hospitals.
6. Ensures that goals and vision are communicated to the staff, outlining the role each group plays in achieving those goals. Monitors compliance with and progress towards achieving the goals.
7. Directs reports when/as necessary ensuring that office operations activity is delivered in a high quality, efficient and safe manner.
8. Involves the Assistant to the Chair/Department Administrator and other leadership as necessary with Division(s) activities, meeting regularly to review/solve operational issues, monitor progress towards identified goals and share other relevant information.
9. Represents department in all-related SIU SOM and SIU Medicine standing committees.
10. In conjunction with the assigned Division Chief(s) and the Healthcare Administrators, develops Divisional clinical and operational metrics. As requested or as necessary, develops format for and provides routine reporting to faculty and SOM.
11. Works closely with the Assistant to the Chair/Department Administrator and Chair to formulate and plan the strategic direction and tactics of the Department.
12. Regularly attends and participates in the following meetings.
13. Manage training of departmental staff
14. Manage Press Ganey data for the divisions to identify areas of growth and put new processes into place.
15. Manage Divisional Alert data weekly and monthly to identify negative or positive trends. Utilize the information to structure Departmental or Divisional goals.
16. Manage Department utilization and capacity data to understand clinic usage and improve level loading in the ambulatory clinics.
17. Manage Department staffing utilizing MGMA benchmarks through a customized staffing model.
18. In conjunction with the Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations, medical directors/designated physician champions, identifies goals and vision for the Department's ambulatory clinics, and develops plans to achieve those goals.
19. Develops Department policies and procedures to ensure that goals and vision are reached, maintaining consistency and compliance with SOM guidelines with the assistance of other Nurse Administrators
20. Works with the Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations, medical directors/designated/physician champions to develop work unit goals that are consistent with the goals and vision for the Department.
21. Communicate the goals and vision to the staff, outlining the role each group plays in achieving those goals. Monitors compliance with and progress towards achieving the goals.
22. Supervises and monitors the work of clinic staff to ensure that patient care is delivered in a high quality and efficient manner directing reports when/as necessary.
23. Serves as recruitment ambassador for Department. Attends all Pilot Interviews and coordinates appropriate hiring managers. Ensures that all Human Resource functions within the Department's ambulatory clinics are adhered to utilizing SOM guidelines, including but not limited to mediating problems between faculty and/or staff, hiring/counseling/termination of staff, orientation and training of staff and conducting staff meetings to ensure timely presentation of divisional, departmental, or SOM information. Involves the lead Health Care Administrator III, Vice-Chair of Clinical Operations and/or Human Resources as appropriate. 24. Involves the Health Care Administrator III and Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations with ambulatory clinic activities, meeting regularly to review/solve operational issues, monitor progress towards identified goals and share other relevant information.
25. Participates in SOM, department and/or hospital committees as requested, including QA/QI activities for all sites.
26. Serves as a clinical resource to clerical and ancillary personnel for all Internal Medicine ambulatory clinics.
27. Attends in-service classes and other meetings as directed and as deemed necessary; suggests ideas for in-service training and improving patient education for all Internal Medicine ambulatory clinics.
28. Maintains Basic Life Support certification required to perform nursing duties.
29. Supervises nursing care delivery for all Internal Medicine ambulatory clinics ensuring that the patient care delivered benefits the patient and meets the individual physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant's expectations.
30. Monitors the quality of work and services performed by Internal Medicine ambulatory clinic staff ensuring functions are performed according to policies and procedures.
31. Coordinates orientation and training for new personnel for all Internal Medicine ambulatory clinic charge nurses.
32. Contributes to the development and implementation of a Quality Assurance Program for the nursing staff and participates in patient care audits for all Internal Medicine ambulatory clinics.
33. Contributes to the development, maintenance, and updating of nursing policies, procedures and standards of care for all Internal Medicine ambulatory clinics.
34. Performs evaluations, approves sick/vacation time, assesses need for compensatory time, and participates in the disciplinary process as required.
35. Provides oversight, correction, and mitigation of problems that arise in Internal Medicine ambulatory clinic (i.e. misunderstanding between staff members, physicians, and/or patients).
36. Providing support and back up as needed for other Nurse Administrators within the Department.
Clinical Duties 10%
1. Provides backup in clinical operations in the absence of Nurse Consultant, and Clinical Nurse
2. Serves as a resource for clinical operations. Understand the work of both nursing and clinical support staff.
3. Provides nursing support to physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant(s).
4. Demonstrates clinical competence in carrying out patient care duties specific to assigned areas.
5. Assists physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant(s) with clinics including but not limited to: preparing patient for examination, testing, and/or procedures; obtaining vital signs and other pertinent information; scheduling and/or explaining procedures/tests to patient and family.
6. Obtains complete health and nursing histories for individuals and families who are patients of the clinic; utilizes this information when providing telephone triaging, direct care and patient education.
7. Documents patient's history, vital signs, and chief complaint in medical record.
8. Interviews patients and their families to determine patient/family dynamics, needs and identification of any contributing factors to illness; guides other staff members in patient teaching; and assists patient's family to participate in patient's teaching plan.
9. Coordinates follow up of outpatient services; facilities scheduling and performance tests and procedures; provides follow up care in conjunction with attending physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant furnishing information and teaching.
10. Manages acute and/or episodic minor illness of outpatients, and recommends and initiates treatment as indicated.
11. Screens/triages telephone calls from patients and other customers; answers questions using professional knowledge, expertise and nursing judgement, and documents actions in patient chart.
12. Administers medications by appropriate route with consideration for patient safety.
13. Performs laboratory procedures specific to assigned area.
14. Responsible for facilitating efficient patient flow within assigned clinic.
15. Following guidelines/protocols established by physician/nurse practitioner/physician assistant(s), refills medications and documents such in patient chart
16. Identifies specialized patient needs and informs appropriate members of the staff
17. Performs PICC line removal and PICC line dressing changes per department protocol.
18. Responsible for and performs any and all LPN/RN functions pertaining to the specialties you are assigned.
19. Travels to satellite locations as assigned.
20. Performs other direct patient care duties as assigned.
CREDENTIALS TO BE VERIFIED BY PLACEMENT OFFICER
Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
- Bachelor degree in nursing or health related field and 2 years supervisory/administrative experience in a health care field
OR
- Four years of supervisory/administrative experience in a health care field.
- Two years of work experience as a Registered Professional Nurse.
